Everything 's quiet for most of the drive. The radio towers are down, and so are the cell towers. Joel and Tommy are talking about what's going on, and who's infected. They pass a family on the road, but Joel told Tommy to keep driving. Multiple cars were either flipped over or on fire, with bodies laying outside the cars. Tommy was driving at a safe speed, but others weren't. As they were crossing through an intersection, a driver wasn't paying attention and hit the side of the truck. The force of the car pushed the truck sideways, and it flipped and rolled onto it's side.

Joel looks in the back to Sarah and says "You okay there kid?"

"I'm fine. My leg hurts a bit and it's bleeding though."

"Alright baby, you gotta crawl out the window, ok?"

"Yeah." Sarah crawls through the window, cutting her arms a bit on the broken glass outside. She tries to stand up, but shouts in pain and sits down. "Daddy, I think my leg's broken."

Joel looks out of his window at Sarah and notices a small piece of bone sticking out. "Shit, just stay right there. I'll carry you out." Joel kicks out the windshield, and crawls out that way. He hands Tommy his gun. "Use this. Keep Sarah safe."

Tommy takes the gun and loads it. "I'll do my best."

Joel nods and walks over to Sarah, carefully picking her up and starts following Tommy. They cut through small alleys and side streets, avoiding as many people as possible. Joel tells Tommy to use the gun only in emergencies, since the shots would attract more dangers to them. They pass by different people, some pinned between cars or infected. Everyone is screaming and running, some being tackled by infected and others pushing people down to get away. Multiple cars crash into each other, and a few explode setting nearby people on fire. Eventually, they make it out of the city and to a little game trail that leads to the interstate. As they are crawling up the last hill to the interstate, a flashlight shines down on them and a voice tells them to stop.

The flashlight clicks off and they see a uniformed man standing on the road, with a rifle aimed at Joel. Tommy reminds Joel that military units were set out to keep people inside the city, and that it wasn't likely they'd be let out. Joel slowly steps toward the soldier and starts talking.

"I understand that you were ordered to keep the city secure. But I need to get my daughter out. She's broken her leg, and the hospital's done for. You can look us over, we're not infected. I just wanna help my daughter."

The soldier shines his light on Sarah's leg, revealing the little piece of bone. He steps closer and shines the light up and down their bodies, checking for bite marks or symptoms of the disease. After he sees that there are none, he turns around and radios his boss.

"Sir, there's a family here asking to leave the city. They've got a daughter that needs medical attention." The soldier stiffens and briefly looks at Joel, then turns back around and continues talking. "But sir, I looked them over. They don't seem to be infec-- Yes sir. Understood, sir."

As the soldier turns towards Joel, he raises his rifle and aims it towards them. Joel quickly turns away from the soldier as the rifle is fired, and hears an extra shot. He gets back up and sees that Tommy shot the soldier, but not in time. Joel is bleeding from his back and stomach, in two different places.

Sarah weakly says "Daddy?" And Joel looks down at her. She's holding her stomach, gasping and crying, as blood comes out of her stomach. Joel quietly says "No. No, no, no, no, no."

He sits up next to Sarah and presses on her wound, trying to slow down the bleeding. Sarah gasps and starts crying harder, reaching up to him, trying to be comforted. Joel keeps his hands on the wound and presses down a bit.

"I know it hurts, baby, I know it hurts. Don't worry baby, you'll be fine. You'll be fine. I'm gonna pick you up. Don't worry baby, you'll be fine."

Joel tries picking her up, and she cries louder. "I know it hurts baby, I know. You're gonna be fine. Don't worry, I'll make sure you're okay."

Joel starts crying and looks at Tommy, who looks down at the ground. Joel turns back and tries picking Sarah up again, but soon realizes she's stopped gasping and crying. His stomach drops, and he holds her and drops his head, crying harder. Her arm falls limply to her side, and her eyes are open, looking at the night sky.
