Amal stayed in the hospital, not because there was a plan but because that was where she was supposed to be.

All things considered, her condition was gradually deteriorating and management was merely supportive.

On a fateful morning, Amal coded.
When code blue was activated, Dr Salma was having her morning tea in her office. Her orderly barged into the office, he was almost out of breath.
"Code blue, room 17" he reported.

"Code blue" Dr Salma ran out of her office, through the halls to room 17 and with the instinct of a doctor to act in emergencies as such, she started on positioning Amal immediately.

"Where is the resus team?" She barked at the nurse "Grab the resus cart"

The resus team barged in together with Amal parents. The team were about to commence resuscitation when it hit Dr Salma,

"Stop!" She shouted

The team stopped immediately and all eyes were on her, an explanation awaited.

Dr Salma blinked back a tear "We can't, the patient is DNR" she announced. The team stepped back.

"Doctor" Umma cried "why are you not doing anything"

Dr Salma swallowed hard "I'm sorry sister" she said "Amal is DNR"

"She's what?" Umma snapped.

"DNR?" Abba shook his head in disproval.

"I'm so sorry" the doctor apologized again, she would love to explain more but her attention was on Amal's vitals monitor. Silently she prayed and waited. Thirty seconds passed, thirty seconds that seemed like forever, then the monitors beeped.

"We've got a rhythm" One of the team nurse shrieked excitedly "she's back, on her own"

"Alhamdulillah" they all chorused and Dr Salma rushed to examine Amal, she was still unconscious but she was alive.
She turned and look at Amal's parents
"She's alive" she said with a nod.

Both Abba and Umma sighed a relieved.
"When..." Umma started to say but burst into tears, she gained her composure almost immediately "when did my daughter sign a DNR?"

"Almost a week ago" Dr Salma replied.

Kamal came in then, the atmosphere was tense already.

"What happened" A confused Kamal asked.

"Amal went into cardiac arrest" his aunt answered

"God!" He lamented as he rushed to the bed side "is she ok?"

"She is alive" his aunt said.

"Kamal" Umma called his name, her voice was ice.

"Na'am Umma" he responded respectfully.

"Amal signed a DNR, did you know?" Umma asked and when Kamal didn't show any sign of surprise and refused to answer immediately, Umma got her answer all right: Kamal knew her daughter sighed a DNR.

"You knew? You let her?" Umma came up to him.

Displaying various degrees of confusion and guilt, Kamal offered an explanation "I couldn't do anything about it Umma, Amal decided on her own, she wanted this"

"And you let her?" Umma scowled at him.

"Umma I tried but you know Amal..."

"Obviously you didn't try hard" She shot.

"Hajiya please, what was he to do" Abba intervened.

"He let our daughter sign a DNR?" Umma fumed "Doctor" she turned to Dr Salma "Amal clearly wasn't in right frame of mind, she wouldn't sign a DNR. I demand it be revoked"
