. . .

I crossed my arms. "I don't know if you've noticed," I said. "But you're not my dad."

Caleb rolled his eyes. "I don't like seeing my friends hit on my little sister or seeing you around all that partying."

"It's the Annual Spenser Welcome Party!" I said. "You can't stop me! Also, little? Really? I'm seven minutes younger than you." He was always doing this. Always trying to control me. I didn't even wanna go to the party, I just wanted to exert some control over him. I pursed my lips. "I won't go if you agree to talk to me about something."

He raised an eyebrow. "Okay...What is it?"

I exhaled deeply, straightening my back. "Our 18th birthday is coming up—"

"No!" Caleb quickly said, about to walk out of the door.

I found The Power inside of me and shut the door with it before Caleb could escape.

He stopped in his tracks. He froze for a good second then turned around to glare at me. "Are you insane?!" he yelled, striding across the room to grab my shoulders. "It's addictive, you bitch!"

My eyes widened. Instantly tears came. Caleb's face softened and he took his hands off of me.

"Adel—" he began with an apologetic tone.

"I know we weren't always close," I said, my voice shaking. "But..." I wiped away a tear and put my chin up. "Dad is dying. It's the truth. And we have the power to save him if one of us just sacrifices our power for a little bit! When we're 18..." I held myself, still shaking, my voice suddenly quiet. "We can be a family again."

Caleb stared at me, his jaw clenched.

I waited.

"I'm sorry, Adelaide," he said. He looked away and left the room.

I sat on my bed, the frame creaking. This whole house did. It was all Victorian and wood, giving  authentic vibes of who we were.

Witches.

Of course Caleb got to have his own little covenant with his three friends. Me? I was alone. Caleb got to have people who understood him. Mom drank and talked to herself all day. Dad was locked up with Gorman, his body weakening by the second.

And I was just in my bedroom, alone, once again.

I clenched my fists. Caleb wasn't going to give me the one thing I needed to save us. To save our family.

I got off the bed and looked out my window. I saw Caleb greet Pogue outside on his motorcycle, then hop on and ride off with him.

See you at the party, Caleb.

. . .

God. There was so much beer, dancing, and hot chicks. Maybe Spenser wouldn't be so bad after all.

I scanned the whole outside rave. Where was that little dinkleshit and his gang of dinkleshits anyway?

My eyes landed on top of the hill. Four figures emerged from the darkness of the forrest, walking down the grass to join the party. Probably them.

I waited, needing the right time to make my entrance. There was so much work to be done to get what I wanted. What I needed. Sipping my drink, I wished there would be an easier way to get Caleb's powers.

I kept my eyes on the Ipswich boys, seeing them flirt and laugh. All of the sudden, a fight broke out. Some guy was about to punch Caleb. I ran up, seeing my chance.

"Hey!" I said. "Leave him alone! He doesn't need some dipshit like you ruining his night."

The Sons looked at me, surprised, but grateful for the extra backup.

"And who do you think you are?" the guy, Jerk, asked me, growling.

"Chase," I hissed, getting in his face.

Jerk snarled at me, but his eyes shifted to the side of us. His gaze settled on a girl. She seemed nervous but had her fists balled up like she wanted to fight. She was cute. Beautiful, even.

My words got caught in my throat.

"Who are you, you little vixen?" Jerk purred.

The girl scowled. "None of your business. Step away from my brother and his friends."

"Adelaide," Caleb warned. "Go away. Let the big boys figure this out."

I looked between them. So Caleb had a sister named Adelaide it seemed. I missed this in my research.

Adelaide glared at Caleb. "I can hold up myself you know!

The creepy jerk once again hit on her, coming closer. "I won't put my fist to your brother's face if you come spend a nice little night with me..."

"Never, pig!" she hissed.

He grabbed a strand of her hair, twirling it. "Oh, come on—"

I threw myself at him with full force, punching and kneeing him in the nuts. He squirmed on the floor under my assault, groaning in pain.

I felt someone lift me up. I turned around. Pogue.

"That's enough, man," he said.

I glared at the creep. The DJ suddenly started to announce something. "The cops are on our tails, guys! Time to run!" he said.

Immediately, everyone around us began to race into the woods for their cars.

Caleb grabbed Adelaide's arm. "Come on," he hissed.

"No!" she yelled. "Not with you."

I smiled at Caleb. "I'll take care of her," I said.

"Just make sure she's safe. I already know she's too stubborn to listen to me," he muttered and began to run off with his crew.

I looked at Adelaide. "Chase," I said, sticking out my hand.

She took it, shaking it. "Adelaide."

"How can I ever forget your name?" I said. I shocked myself at how much I meant it.

She blushed. "Oh, um. Thanks, uh...We sh-should get going!" she said quickly. She ran, surprising me. I chuckled and ran after her, both of us racing into the woods.

And that's the night my whole plan changed.
