lies

The moon shone through the windowed corridors casting a silver light across the barren cobblestone floors. The night was silent, every single person sleeping in their quarters, everyone but one. A warm glow peeked out of the crack of the mess hall door. Inside sat a raven-haired man sipping tea under the candlelight. He sat in a deafening silence that slowly drowned him into a sea of his own thoughts. The candle flickered and flared, his only anchor to reality being the light that danced across the table. His tea grew cold as he sat there, just thinking as time painfully stretched on. Seconds felt like hours and hours felt like minutes. The man's mind was a mess of twilight and rain, fog and sun, tears and blood. The severed head of his sister. The half eaten corpse of his brother. The man who died holding his hand, desperately grasping at the strings of hope that he somehow made a difference to humanity.

He told him that he made a difference.

He lied.

"Corporal?" A soft voice tentatively called the man from the prison of his mind. A slightly disheveled woman stood holding the door open, her robe tied around her petite frame.

"Ah, Petra." His voice was raspier than usual. Foriegn. Defeated.

She walked over her shuffling footsteps echoing loudly in the empty room. Petra took a seat next to the captain giving him a soft smile. Her smile was serene, warm, and seemed to melt the ice encasing his heart. It was something that only she seemed to be able to do.

"I figured you'd be here after today." She murmured twiddling her thumbs in her lap. They fell into an understanding quiet, both watching as the candle slowly burned down. They shared a conversation through a language of silence only seasoned soldiers such as themselves could speak. Just at that moment the world seemed irrelevant. Nothing seemed to matter. They were drawn to the firelight's entrancing dance of serenity and warmth. Comforted by the presence of each other, and each other only. The weight of the cruel world lifted off their shoulders as time ticked by. For once they felt at peace in a world that peace had no place in, in two hearts that yearned and cried for years for anything but the hell they went through, but only in the presence of each other was it silent. Only in the presence of each other was there peace. The candle slowly burned down and withered away, leaving the room in a dark moonlit glow.

"I'm glad." Petra spoke softly after a moment, turning her eyes onto Levi. He tilted his head over so slightly inviting an explanation. She chuckled lightly, "well, he died so peacefully after you spoke to him, don't you think?" She asked looking out the window to the sliver of a moon and sea of twinkling stars. The light illuminated her face and gave a glitter to her eyes. Levi could feel himself falling deeper and deeper into the unforgiving embrace of love. His heart throbbed at the sight of her. His turmoil vanished.

"Petra.." He murmured with a sad tone. "Please, don't ever leave me."

She turned to look at him with one of her world-melting smiles. It stretched wide wrapping Levi in a blanket that spelt safety and warmth.

"Don't worry, Corporal. I'll never leave you." She spoke with the utmost sincerity one could muster.

She lied.
