Sometimes, Bai Yutong really wondered what in gods name drove him to becoming a crime investigator, let alone one of the best. There he was, on the verge of closing a case, barely anticipating to call it a day to go home to his nice, fluffy bed, when out of the blue he runs right into some other trouble.
'I will never finish my reps. Never.'
The evening was a disaster.
One minute, they closed a case. The next, they walked straight into another one. Literally.
There was a squabble/cat fight the next block down from their last scene. They were going to let the newbie cops handle it, but someone had decided to pull out a knife, then a gun, to a fist fight, and shot.
The nearest police were dispatched in other locations dealing with other inconveniences, Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao were already in the surrounding area, and voila!
That's how they ended up here:
Bai holding a gun at a man's chest; the man holding a piece of steel at Zhan Yao's throat and a gun at his head, demanding they give someone back before he crushes the psychologist's airway; and Zhan Yao was being damingly demanding and calm again. (It still pisses Yutong off. Every time! His need-to-protect still high-strung.)
"Drop your weapons. Let's be civilized and talk this out."
The man only tightened his grip.
"Just like the other 3 times? I suppose you're not carrying a dart or gass bomb again this time, no?"
"Carrying a- what? NO!"
"There's been a misunderstanding. We do not know who you are referring to."
The man didn't move, the fire of spite boiling like thunder under his brown orbs. Flabbergasted, Bai Yutong whipped out his I.D. "We're police!"
The unknown man went stiff, obviously shocked. Dropping his knife, he snatched the I.D. card out of Bai's hand, bringing it up to his nose, eyes zooming over the info before whipping around.
"Shit!" The card was whipped back at the officer just before the man sprinted down the alley.
"HEY! STOP RIGHT THERE!" Barely having time to catch the card, Bai Yutong was off again, down the darkness, chasing the last surviving suspect. Zhan Yao followed, hot on his trail. "Man, this guy's fast!"
As they ran, the officers noticed that this man was not keen on trying to lose them. Instead, it was as if he was searching desperately for something, not bothering to look back or double check anything. At one point, the was zoomed off so fast that the cops thought they lost him. Luckily, Dr. Zhan caught sight of a retreating back entering an old, crumbling building. Bai Yutong paused, glancing at his partner. With a nod, they silently agreed to follow from a more discrete entrance.
"Tch, these criminals have lost their creativity. Why would he corner himself in a warehouse?"
"Some traps are willingly fallen into." The doctor checked the surroundings. "Let's go."
"Don't order me around! Don't forget who's in charge!"
Zhan Yao stopped, sighing. "Mr. Bai sir," he bickered back to the grown child, "Do you propose that we shall go in now?"
Bai Yutong bit his cheek, awkwardly avoiding eye contact. It was obvious he was fuming, but at the same time knew the navy-clad man was right; they had to go in or else they'll lose more than just a lead. Zhan Yao waited patiently for the meek coughed-up "let's" accompanied by a flailing hand, before proceeding to sneak around the building, smirk barely noticeable.
