It had been a couple of days since Gwen had seen Jesse, but she couldn't shake him from her thoughts. Every night at work when the door opened, she looked up, hoping it would be the mysterious man with the scarred face. And every time it wasn't, she couldn't help but feel a little disappointed.
She sat in her kitchen on a dreary monday afternoon, simultaneously sipping a cup of coffee and feeding Lily, her two year old daughter, when her phone started ringing. She felt her heart turn ice cold when the caller id read "Mom". She hesitated before answering.
"Hello?"
"Hello, Gwyneth," her mother spoke firmly into the phone. She cringed at the use of her full name. Her mother knew well enough that she hated being called that, but Gwen knew thats exactly why she did it.
Silence filled the air, neither of them speaking. Gwen couldn't remember the last time her mother called her out of the blue, it had to have been at least 6 months or so.
Finally, Gwen broke the silence, "Why are you calling, mom?"
"I'm coming to visit you."
Gwen froze, nearly dropping her cell phone from her hand. Since moving to Alaska two years ago, her mother had never shown a slight interest in coming out to visit her. She didn't want her to. In her eyes, her mother was a cold and cruel person, thinking of nothing but herself and her image.
"No."
"Excuse me, Gwyneth?" Her mother sounded shocked.
"I said, no. Don't come visit me."
"Well, why not?"
Gwen couldn't hold back anymore. She let the words she had been holding back flow out, "Because of what you did mom! You turned something that was supposed to be one of the happiest times in my life to a nightmare and you didn't care about me or how I felt! All you cared about was what would happen if people found out, what they would think. You let me feel so alone in a time when I needed you the most. Dad would have supported me and he would have loved my baby. All you wanted to do was make the problem go away," Angrily, she hung up the phone.
Although she did feel better getting that all off her chest, she started to cry. She looked over at the little girl, who was her entire world, sitting in her high chair, looking up at her with big brown eyes that were identical to hers. It made the tears flow harder until her vision became blurry and her head ached.
She cried until the tears wouldn't come anymore, and then pulled herself together like she had done so many times before.
