‘Do you think it’s true, then?’
I’m walking into the family room in my apartment when Al asks this. ‘What?’ I ask, setting the two steaming cups of tea I brought in on the coffee table.
‘You know, The Doctor, Amelia Pond, and whatnot. Do you believe it?’ He takes a sip of his tea. I laugh lightly, wrapping my hands around mine and leaning back on the couch next to him.
‘Maybe I do, maybe I don’t. Why does it matter?’ I look up at him and stare into his eyes, which are dazed and adventurous. Smiling to myself, I stir my tea.
It’s Al’s turn to laugh. ‘Well, I’d sure like to, after hearing about all our neighbour’s adventures. Did you hear about the vortex in that kid’s wardrobe? That’d be amazing!’ He sighs wistfully. I nod, smiling, as I remember the countless times I would hear about that story. Al turns his gaze to me. ‘So, do you or do you not?’
‘Uhm…kind of.’ He waits for me to continue. ‘Alright, no, I don’t. Well…look, it’s complicated. I would have no problem with the Doctor whisking me away in his TARDIS, but, come on. Timmy’s family’s always been a bit…off in the head. They could have easily made up a story about a wardrobe with a mad, evil doll house in it.’
‘True, but think about it. A magical man with a time machine and infinite rooms open for rent…’ he trails off, going back in his daze.
I scoot closer and rest my head on his shoulder, closing my eyes. Al and I have known each other since second grade, which means he’s just about my only friend. We’re both homeschooled, and we have apartments next to each other. We constantly visit each other, and our parents meet up in whichever apartment we aren’t using. It’s a nice system. Also, it means I get to have a second pair of parents. Mr and Mrs Owens have always been there when I need them the most.
Suddenly, the door opens, letting in Al’s parents. ‘Oh, hello Evelyn!’ Mrs. Owens says, smiling.
‘Hi, Mrs Owens. How are you?’ I ask politely.
‘Alright… You’re mum beat me again.’ She rolls her eyes, still smiling. ‘I will win eventually, though. I think I’m getting the hang of it!’ She laughs as she and Mr Owens go into their bedroom to get ready for bed.
The doorbell rings, and I jump to get it. I unlock it and open the door, and my jaw instantly drops. It’s him. The only. The last. The…
‘Hello,’ he says. ‘I’m the Doctor.’
