What does it take to be a good friend?

All I always wanted was to be important to someone, not necessarily a member of the opposite sex. I just want a friend that I can be so sure will be there for me, someone I could tell all the things I keep bottled up, I tell myself that I have friends but there are many parts of my past I have not told anyone because of trust.
