“Can I have a small wafer cone with Smores’ ice cream with chocolate chips on top?” A little 10 year old boy who was with his mom who was having a conversation with another lady clearly not paying any attention to her child.
“Yeah.” I mumbled as I stuck my hand in the snot freezing cold ice cream freezer and scooped out the ice cream. “It’s 3 dollars and 25 cents.” I said as the little boy yanked his cranky mother over to me to give me the money. As they were walking out, the boy frowned pointing at his ice cream saying something to his mom. They walked back up to the counter and the boy looked like he was going to burst into tears. The mother handed the cone back to and scowled at me.
“You forgot the chocolate chips.”
“My bad.” I rolled my eyes scooping some chocolate chips on the ice cream. The lady gave it back to her son who was happy again but gave me yet another nasty glared.
“This is why I don’t give tips.” She said walking out the door pulling her son behind her. You know I really love my job. Everybody who comes in here is always so friendly. Anyway, for the rest of the day it was slow since it was a Tuesday and not as annoying as other days, until Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome came strutting in with his friends. Before I could even try to get Michele or someone else to take their order, Riley came up to me making escape impossible.
“Hey Aria.” Riley flashed his pearly white at sitting on one of the stools at the counter. My heart started to race a little bit. I know how much hate I have for this guy, but I still couldn’t help he fact that I didn’t fully get over him.
“Hi.” I mumbled pushing a loose strand of hair behind my ear, but it immediately fell right back down.
“Here.” Riley leaned over the counter, his face so close to mine, and pushed the piece of hair behind my ear not pulling his face away from mine when he did so. The last time we were this close was last summer and we were doing a lot more than just gazing into each others eyes. His crystal blue eyes were piercing into mine and I started feeling a little weak.
“Aria, it’s 6:30 you can go home.” My boss Angie yelled at me across the shop at me breaking mine and Riley’s gaze finally. Feeling relieved I walked away from the counter into the back room to grab my stuff. I put my lightweight jean jacket on and took down my hair shaking it out and slinging my bag over my shoulder.
“Goodnight Michele.” I waved over at her, where she was getting Riley and his friend’s their ice cream. I glanced over at him to see him smiling so cheekily at me, I just rolled my eyes and walked out.
“Ma I’m home.” I yelled as I walked through the front door. I heard someone in the kitchen, probably my mom looking for more weed or something. “Did you call Grandma about the water bill becau-“ I stopped when I saw some old guy probably in his 50’s sitting in one of our stools getting a hit from my mom’s bong. “Who the fuck are you?”
“A friend of your moms.” The guy said not even glancing at me but focusing on his lighter that wasn’t re-lighting.
“Where is she?” I spat getting angrier. My mom was always bringing strange men home and it pisses me off because most of the time they get touchy feely with me, and she never gives a shit like usual.
“She went out for a little.” The guy mumbled frustrated with the fact that his lighter still wouldn’t re-light. Of course she did. I rolled my eyes and walked out of the kitchen to go up stairs.
“Hey!” The creepy guy yelled after me. “Do you have a lighter?”
“No!” I yelled back, breaking into a full sprint to my room slamming the door shut. As soon as I got in I locked my door from the inside and checked to make sure no one was in there. Not even stopping to change out of my work clothes, I walked over to my window and opened it and climbed down the side of my house. I couldn’t stay in my house with some strange guy I didn’t know two things about while my mom was out for who knows how long. But I was used to this.
