"Wynter honey, put on something nice. You can't wear your pajamas all day," my Mom said, in her fake sweet voice that she used to talk to our citizens. "It will embarrass me." Please! The last thing I care about right now is you being embarassed at some stupid dinner party. My mom is the Queen of Possiblis. She is the type of person that loves you if you are perfect and hates you if you make the smallest of mistakes. The type of two-faced person that has two different personalities; a kind, sweet, responsible act that she puts on whenever she is talking to someone important, and her rude, selfish, annoyingly perfectionist side that she uses on literally everyone else. Naturally, as her son, I fall under the category of everyone else. Tonight was "the biggest party of the year". It's funny how every other party we go to also seems to be "the biggest" or "the best". I plopped down on the couch and clicked on the TV. "Wynter! What are you doing! I told you to get ready! Tonight is very important!"
"Is tonight more important than your son's happiness?" I asked. She laughed and walked away.
"Get dressed, honey." I knew her answer was a yes. She cared more about the factory than her family. She cared more about the factory than her only son.
When I was younger, I had longed for her to pay attention to me, but she never did. It was always about the factory. It still was, but I just stopped caring. Deep down, I know that all I want is for her to love me, but I can never tell her that.
"Mom. I don't want to go tonight. I mean, I can't,"I did my most realistic fake cough and put my hand over my heart. "I'm sick. Surely you can understand."
"Awww... Ok honey...," She said, trying to sound sympathetic. "Bye then!"
She grabbed her bag and stormed out of the room. The second that I heard the click of the door, my mind was racing. This could be my chance to make a better Possiblis. Without her.
I was tired of trying to impress her. I was tired of following the rules. I was tired of not being listened to. I was tired of hearing about the factory. But most of all, I was tired of her. I knew what I had to do.
As queen of Possiblis, she has the power to control the factory. She decides what the factory affects and makes perfect. No one knew how one possessed the power, but they knew it was very strong. The power of the factory would be passed on to the next leader if the current one perished. As her only son and eldest child, I was heir to the throne.
I went into a stair tower and looked out of the window to the front of the castle. I saw my mother galloping away on her horse. I continued down the stairs. On the second floor I stopped descending and walked into the hallway. My feet were thinking before my mind. They were taking me somewhere. I opened a dark wood door with brass designs. I had never been in this room before. In fact, I had never seen this room before. I clutched the knob and turned. Inside was a dark room with a big table, a tall mirror, and a bookshelf with only one book on it. I walked across the room and around the table to the bookshelf. On the spine it read; "Possiblisian Magic". I grabbed the book and tried to pull it off of the shelf, but instead of it coming off, the shelf opened to another room. I closed the door behind me. The room was pitch black except for a small jar of light in the corner. I grabbed the jar and started towards the door to the first room. It was locked. In was stuck. Trying not to panic, I started to unscrew the cap of the jar. All of a sudden, I heard a voice.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you," the voice said.
"Who are you! Let me out!" I was starting to panic now.
"What!? Your mother never told you about me? Well, I guess I wouldn't tell my kid either... My name is Andromeda. Your mother took advantage of me and my magic. I helped her build the factory. She wanted to be the best. She made me make her queen, she made me make her beautiful, and she wanted me to kill and torture every other society or make them her slaves. When I refused, she locked me in here, never to be seen again, until now. I am the only one who can stop the factory. I am the only one who knows the dangers."
"The dangers?" I asked. I had always thought that the factory was keeping us safe.
"Yes. There are many dangers. This factory will lead to the destruction of Possiblis, not the well-being. I have been trying to tell everyone in the outside world, but no one wants to listen."
"Then how did I get here?"
"You believed. And you are going to save Possiblis." I didn't want to get rid of my mother anymore. This was my chance. I knew that if I saved Possiblis, she would pay attention to me. I would be her favorite. And she would love me like a normal son. "If you have the right intentions," Andromeda added. "Otherwise, Possiblis will go back to the destruction it was before. It will disappear. It will disintegrate. And so will everything and everyone in it." I ignored what she said and started to think of the heroic speech that I was going to give to my mother. The room seemed to be getting darker. I looked down at the jar of light in my hand. The light was fading. "You have to do it for Possiblis and not for yourself." It was as if she could read my mind. "Because this mission is for Possiblis."
"Ok. What do I do? How do I save Possiblis?" I asked, eagerly.
"You can't... It is too late... You were our only hope."
"What do you mean? I want to help-,"I protested.
"No. You want your Mom to like you. You don't care about Possiblis, you only care about yourself." The room started to crumble. The floor started to disappear. The ceiling caved in. I ran to the door. I was still locked in. "You are just like your mother." My world was crumbling all around me. But the worst part was, I knew it was my fault.
