Her next memory was in a hospital bed, machines buzzing and whirring around her and an oxygen mask strapped to her face. The dim daylight in the small window suggested it was early morning. The nurse came in, made some notes and silently took the mask of Janie’s head before leaving. “I’m getting fed up off the asthma attacks.” hissed Janie to herself an shuffled round in her bed, only to feel an immense pain in her leg. She looked down and saw a bandaged running down for about 20cm across her shin, spots of blood peeping out amongst the white.
Is the real world starting to get to you Janie?
The doctor entered to witness Janie trying to undo her bandage so she could survey her war wound, and she slowly looked up guiltily. “Janie, this is the second time you’ve been hospitalised after sleeping. If you really can’t cope with se-”
“Eww doc, that’s gross. I ain’t done no deed yet.” she said, scowling. “I don’t understand why, and it’s definitely not because I’m getting on before I sleep.”
The doctor was amused, “I was going to say sedatives, but I’m glad you’re still a virgin anyway.”
Janie went unbelievably red, as if she were auditioning to be part of the union flag. “He he... “
“Now Janie, you’re probably wondering why you have a rather graphic cut on your leg?” Janie nodded, patting the bandage before flinching and realising that was probably a bad idea. “And so are we. It seems you were not only suffering from asthma when you called 999, but you were also suffering a lot of blood loss. Is there some way this could have happened?”
Janie was as confused as the rest of the medical team, she would have been even more confused than them, but deep inside she had an inkling that it was because of the dream. The dream… The dream… The dream! She remembered Alex’s email address and was relieved when 20 minutes later Miriam was let in and she tasked her with writing an email to Alex. She wrote down the address and then they began to talk. “Look bro, I’m so sorry about yesterday… I got mad…”
“JJ, I’ve read the texts, I’m so sorry for getting angry to, I know you’re confused and this is all hard for you but I try and help.”
Janie reached over and hugged her best friend as well as she could, “I know. Thank you.”
“Adam said he’ll be over soon, he’s just getting yo chocolate I think” said Miriam, turning from apologetic to excited. Janie cringed, “He can’t see me like this! And anyway, chocolates? That’s like something that would happen in a romance novel…”
NO!!! Has she found out I based this world on many different novels?
Miriam nodded, “Yes, but it’s adorable! And because the doctor’s are keeping you in he’s also gonna come round after school and bring you homework so you can do it together.”
“That’s so sweet! Now, have you got a comb?” Janie asked, knowing Miriam was likely to have one somewhere. After a bit of shuffling around and a crazed pocket search, the comb was finally found and Janie sorted out her hair with it, just as Adam walked in. “Y’know Janes, I think you would’ve looked better with that bed head!” he winked and handed her a box of chocolate. “Are you feeling ok?” he was concerned and his face showed it, whilst Mim had dragged Josh into a corner. “I’m feeling fine and dandy, I’ll be great in no time! MIRIAM. YOU GET YOUR BUTT OVER HERE NOW.” she shouted and Janie rushed back before doing a quick curtsy.
