Chapter 2

Sinner

<< Did he really come looking for you? >> Scott asked incredulously.

Lydia nodded.

<< Yes. >>

<< After all he did to us! It's absurd! >> Stiles said furiously. << He should pay for what has happened. He should pay for what he did to Allison. >>

Lydia gasped. Scott suddenly turned white.

<< Stiles, maybe you should be more careful about what you say. >> Malia said softly.

<< No. >> Lydia replied, feeling the blood - cold, freezing – run in her veins. << I don’t want to forget. I won’t forget Allison. >>

Scott got a lump in his throat that he did not breathe. He pressed his hands on the table, looking just like that to find enough strength to remain standing.

<< Sorry, but I have to go. I have to go to the clinic. See you later. >>

<< Scott, if that is what I said ... >> Stiles began to say, slinking behind.

<< Stiles, no. All is well. >> Scott answered, with a smile too fake even for someone like him. << It's not your fault. >> He said, casting a quick look at Lydia.

And she knew. She knew what he was talking about. It was Void’s fault, now if Allison was gone. And somehow, even her own. She could have stopped him.

<< Why are you doing this? >> Lydia asked, sliding her palms along the railings. She felt Void’s breath behind her, slow and warm on her neck.

<< Because we are equal. We want it all, the whole world at our feet. >>

<< I'm not like you. >>

<< Oh no, Lydia. You are, instead. You're exactly like me. And standing by me, you'll have the power you want. >>

<< I do not want. >> Lydia said determined, turning around. Void’s eyes, those of Stiles, looked at her like anyone had never done. He noticed that every time she was there, he did nothing but get closer and closer. He did it slowly, for a long time and now she knew why. << I do not want this power, if it means stepping on my friends to get it. >>

Void smiled one of those smiles somewhere between amused and informed. One of those smiles that you would never forget.

<< Damn, you're too smart for a pack of wolves like that. You said exactly what I thought you'd say. >>

Lydia didn’t understand.

<< What? >>

Void took a step and suddenly found themselves again too close. Lydia slid backwards, holding on to the wall with one hand. She could hear the screams of battle hitting the skin as tennis balls. If Allison had died or one of her friends, she would never forgive herself. She had to stop him. She could do it now.

<< I've tested. >> Void said. << I just wanted to see if you were really as I had thought. >>

<< What's that? >>

<< A girl exceptionally bright and too smart for those friends of yours. >>

<< They saved me, when there was no one to do it. >>

<< When I was not there, you mean. >>

Lydia pushed him away, fed up with that attitude so arrogant. Who was he to say those words? Who was he to her? Where he had been when she had had the most need? Whenshe felt lost, alone and desperate?

<< Just tell me what you want from me. Stop talking. >>

Void looked good, making her feel like no discovery was ever able to do. Or maybe, she'd never let anyone else do.

<< I think you know that. >>

<< You want me to scream? Shall I tell you who will die? >>

<< Stiles is dying and you know it. No, there is another thing. >>

<< Tell me. >>

Void moved up, but the heart of Lydia continued to pound frantically in her chest. And there was a demand in her eyes, something like “Please do not do it. Do not make me fall in love with you”.

She felt his breath slipping down her neck when he spoke. She would have preferred that he had not.

<< I think I have feelings for you. >>

And that was the point of no return.

She dialed quickly the number of Scott. She waited for the phone to ring. Answer. Come on, answer me!

<< Lydia. >>

<< I could not stop it. He did not say what he wanted to do. >>

<< I do not care. It is the past. >>

<< Scott, please ... >>

<< She's dead, Lydia! Your apology will not let her come back! >> Shouted Scott, on the other side. << Allison died, Lydia. >>

Lydia exhaled, her eyes burning with tears.

<< Forgive me for all the things I've done. >>

For a few endless seconds, Scott did not speak.

<< I'm not a priest, Lydia. >>

<< But you're my friend. >>

Scott sighed.

<< I never told Stiles. Only I know what happened that night in the tunnel of Oak Creek. That should be enough. Bye. >>

The night brought the usual nightmare. And she was more alone than ever. She heard the voices, the voices that temporarily marred the head and killed from within. She felt herself falling, while she was still dreaming about Void’s hands that caressed her arms, his soft lips, which then were those of Stiles ... She woke with a start, almost crying. She did not realize that she had just let out a shout.

The screen of the phone was switched on, suddenly. She took it with trembling hands. Sweat ran down her forehead. Unlocked it and read. Her heart fell in her stomach.

I believe that you've never forgotten.

I will come back to get you.
