Okay, so this rant is about these two villains in the usual romance stories.
Sluts.
And Bullies.
Why oh why are you ranting about such novices? Well, the answer is simple.
THEY ARE SO CLICHED!!!!!
Okay, so we can agree that every story needs an antagonist. But seriously, though, can we seriously need to do away with your average school bullies and school sluts, because it REALLY ANNOYS ME WHEN EVERY SINGLE BOOK CONTAINS A CLICHED ANTAGONIST!!!!!!!!! I'm not saying we need to get rid of them, but can we make them less cliched and one-sided, and start making our antagonists well developed and multi-sided?
So, Stretch, if you find most antagonists cliched, then what are you really looking for?
Well the answer is simple: You give them depth!
By depth, I mean evolve them. Give them a story and a motivation. Don't just create the antagonist just so you have one. Give him or her a story, just like your protagonist.
For example, let's say that you have a school slut. Let's call her Jesobelle Lake. She is your typical rich girl.
Don't: Just go on and describe how slutty and snobby she is.
Do: Give her a reason to be slutty and snobby.
Don't: Just put her in the story so she can cause problems for your heroine.
Do: Give her a backstory. Ex: Maybe her mother is a fashion designer and her dad bailed on her as a kid. Her mom is way too busy with her brand to hang out with Jesobelle, so of course, she decides to act out at school. She sleeps around because she craves the attention from guys.
So yea. Just a short rant. Hopefully I've come to a point. Please don't create a bully just to create one. Make them more involved. Please!?
