Domitila swung her legs about through the bars of her cage. A man came down past the rows of cages stacked on top of each other and threw some food into each one. Domitila called out.

 “Ola! Como você está?” she said cheerily, despite the darkness and stink of the other animals. She had been caught in the Amazon and throw into this little cage, along with the jaguars, anteaters and other species that called the Amazon home. The man stopped at her cage and gave her a little smirk. He reached through the bars and moved the dark brown hair out of Domitila’s face. Domitila had dark skin and large brown eyes that was the same colour as the bark on trees. She had stolen some clothes from tourists in the camps that were set up near the border of the Amazon.

 She had made friends with the man who brought the food, even if he couldn’t understand her. She spoke Portuguese. He spoke English.

 “Posso ter um pouco de comida ? Estou com fome.” Domitila said. She asked him this every time he came. The man’s blue eyes sparkled mischievously and he reached into his brown leather jacket, pulling out a candy bar.

 “Stole this just for you.” he said, holding it out to her. A tail snaked it’s way out of the cage and wrapped itself around the chocolate bar. Domitila held it up to her face, sniffed it and unwrapped it, taking a bite of the creamy chocolate. She giggled.

 “Eu não sei o que é isso , mas obrigado.” Domitila said, taking another bite and finishing the bar. Her tail tucked the wrapper into the man’s pocket again then patted him on the mass of blonde hair he kept hidden under his hat. He gave her a million watt smile then walked away. Domitila’s ears twitched at the sound of his footsteps fading into the darkness. She curled up into a ball, holding her legs to her chest as she listened to the sounds of caged animals. A single tear traced it’s way down her cheek and the rocking of the ship lulled her into sleep.
