Once they finished their song, the Oompa Loompas ran back to their work as Augustus was finally sucked all the way up the pipe. Willy and I clapped madly,
"Bravo! Well done! Aren't they delightful? Aren't they charming?"
"I do say that all looked rather rehearsed." Mr. Salt commented.
"That's because they use the music to decipher which dance routine they do. Then they simply make up the words, they're very talented!" I explained. Willy looked impressed,
"How-"
"Never mind that! Where's my son?! Wheres my boy?! Where does that pipe go to?!" Mrs. Gloop wailed.
"That pipe just so happens to lead directly to the room where I make the most delicious kind of strawberry flavored chocolate coated fudge." Willy replied proudly. Mrs. Gloop looked alarmed,
"Then he'll be made into strawberry flavored chocolate coated fudge? They'll be selling him by the pound all over the world!" Willy paused,
"No, I wouldn't allow it." He stated, "Can you imagine Augustus flavored chocolate coated Gloop? Ew! No one would buy it." He turned away from Mrs. Gloop and emitted a call with his tongue I recognized to be Oompa language. Soon enough, one came running up. Willy stopped to his level,
"I want you to take Mrs. Gloop to the fudge room, kay? Take a big stick," he waved his own for effect, "and start poking around in the mixing barrel, kay?" The Oompa Loompa crossed his arms over his chest, then looked at me and back at Willy for permission.
"Oh, he wants to ask you a question." Willy translated. I smiled and nodded to the little guy.
'Did you really like our song that much?' He signed. Willy opened his mouth, but his jaw dropped as he watched me sign back!
'Oh yes! It was so enjoyable! You're very talented!' The Oompa Loompa looked surprised and delighted as he bowed. I returned the gesture and he beamed at me before leading Mrs. Gloop away. I turned to see everyone staring at me, Mrs. Beauregarde glaring a hole into my flesh. I blushed when I noticed Willy looking at me with adoration, smiling sheepishly as I tucked some hair behind my ear.
"We-ll, let's continue the tour." Willy snapped us out of it, striding away. Mrs. Beauregarde shoved me slightly to get next to Willy. Charlie fell in step beside me,
"Are all those stories true (Y/N)?" I looked at him and nodded sadly,
"Yes, every single one of them." His eyes welled with pity.
"And they're all part of your story, aren't they?" I swallowed and nodded again, averting my gaze. Talk about a smart kid. He gave me a huge hug and I wrapped my arms around his skinny frame.
"I'm sorry." He whispered.
"It's okay." I fought back tears, "It's not your fault." Breaking away, we caught up with the others who were standing at a candy modelled like a sea horse and filled with Oompa Loompas. The Oompa Loompas were all sniggering.
"What's so funny?" Violet asked.
"I think it's from all the doggone cocoa beans." Willy said, "By the way, did you guys know that chocolate contains a property that triggers the release of endorphins? It gives one the feeling of being in love."
"You don't say." Mrs. Beauregarde purred seductively. For some reason, a pang of jealousy made my lip curl. Willy also looked very uncomfortable,
"All aboard!" He tried to change the subject. Shaking it off, I helped Charlie into the boat. My heart skipped in my chest when Willy sat next to me.
"Onward!" He called with a wave of his hand. The boat started to move, the Oompa Loompas rowing to the banging of the drum. After some time, Will leaned over the edge and handed me a ladle now filled with melted chocolate,
"Here, try some of this. You look starved to death." I paused before handing it to Charlie to let him take the first sip,
"It's great!" He said. I took a small sip, closing my eyes and humming at the taste. Willy beamed,
"That's because its mixed by waterfall." He rose his voice and the others turned to look at him, "The waterfall is most important. It mixes it up, makes it light and frothy. By the way, no other-"
"You've already said that." Veruca interrupted.
"So?" I rose a brow. She glared. Willy paused, eyes flicking between us before leaning back,
"You're all quite short, aren't you?"
"Well yeah, we're children." Violet snapped.
"Well that's no excuse- I was never as short as you." He chided.
"You were once." Mike said.
"Was not! Know why? Cause I distinctly remember putting a hat on my head." He touched his, smiling smugly, "Look at your short little arms, you would never reach." The boat fell silent for a while until Charlie asked,
"Do you even remember what it was like being a kid?"
"Oh boy do I!... Do I?" He seemed to zone out. Charlie whispered into my ear,
"Did I do something wrong?"
"No, I think he's having a flashback. You don't know what triggers it." I murmured back. I waited for a few moments to see if he would come back by himself. When he didn't, I gently touched his shoulder. He didn't respond. So I lightly touched his hand. He was still out of it. I took a deep breath and laid my hand on his, hoping he wouldn't hate me for it. He finally snapped back to reality and looked down at our hands, then back at me.
"Sorry, you just zoned out for a, long, while." I smiled as I hesitatingly pulled my hand from his. To my amazement, his hand snapped up and grabbed my fingers. He slowly brought it back to his lap and laced his fingers with mine.
"I-I need something to ground me for a moment." He mumbled, eyes on the floor as his face turned red. I smiled and closed my fingers around his, pink dusting my cheeks.
