Willy appeared to relax after a while and gently released my fingers. I delicately took my hand back, half wishing to hold his for longer. Though my thoughts were quickly distracted as we entered a dark tunnel.
"How can they see where they're going?" Violet asked.
"They can't." Said Willy, "There's no knowing where they're going. Switch on the lights!"
As the lights turned on, the moment of weightlessness grabbed me as the boat plunged into some rapids. I grinned with childlike delight as my hair was whipped back. Charlie was clearly enjoying himself. The rest didn't seem quite that enthusiastic. We soon past the rapids and slowed down as we got to some rooms, each marked to show what was inside.
"People. Keep an eye out; we're passing some very important rooms here." Mrs. Beauregarde turned to Willy flirtatiously as she spotted a door marked 'hair cream',
"What do you use hair cream for?"
"To lock in moisture." He giggled.
"Duh," I muttered. Her gaze became confused as she turned away. Charlie nudged me as he saw a cow being whipped by Oompa Loompas,
"Whipped cream." He said. Willy grinned,
"Precisely. Haha!"
"That doesn't make any sense." Veruca rebuffed. Willy's smile vanished as he looked at her,
"For your information little girl. Whipped cream isn't whipped cream at all unless it is whipped with whips." He gave her a fake smile, "Everybody knows that."
The boat was jostled down some more rapids before finally settling down underneath a circle of light.
"Stop the boat! I wanna show you guys something!" Willy called excitedly. We came to a stop at a door,
'Inventing room.'
We walked into the room. There were dozens of complex machines, all working, fizzing and popping. Willy turned to us,
"This is the most important room in the entire factory! Now, everyone enjoy yourselves but just don't touch anything, okay? Go on, scoot." He shooed us off. I immediately examined a series of tubes and bottles some Oompa Loompas were working on. One of them added a drop of clear liquid and the whole thing changed colors. I grinned in fascination. I felt like a kid in a candy store... Heck, I was a kid in a very, very large candy store.
"What do you think of it? It's still in its early stages, but-"
"You plan on making color-changing candy?!" I almost squealed. I took a deep breath to calm myself down,
"Sorry, that was rude of me. Please do continue." I apologized. Willy smiled,
"It's alright, you did get it right though. I just don't know which candy to use it on." He said, staring at the bottles. An idea popped into my head,
"Why not candy lollipops? With all the different colors, they can all change into a rainbow swirl!" I paused as another idea came to my head, "You could even have them colorless! Once you start eating it, it will change into all sorts of colors!" Willy looked thrilled,
"Yes! Precisely! It could work for candy canes as well!" I nodded enthusiastically and we high-fived. I looked at the Oompa Loompas, they seemed to be holding in giggles and nudging each other.
"Mr. Wonka, what's this?" I turned to see Violet looking at an open-top tank with an Oompa Loompa swimming inside. He rose to the surface and handed a red ball to Willy. Leaning slightly over the tank, I caught a big whiff of preservatives and chemicals. I held out my hand,
"Can I see that?" I asked Willy, he smiled and handed it to me. I thanked him and held it to the light between my thumb and forefinger. It looked like an ordinary gobstopper but, knowing Willy, it would be far from it. I tapped it on a hard surface and examined it again, surprised as I noticed it had no damage.
"Okay, I give in. Is it something you break open to reveal a present inside? A strawberry flavored bomb?" I took a wild guess, "An everlasting gobstopper?"
"Precisely! Thank you!" Willy cried. I blinked,
"Wait, this really is?" Willy nodded. My jaw dropped,
"Damn!" Was all I could say, "Just how smart are you?" He turned bright red and gave a shy smile, ducking his head.
"So it's like gum?" Violet said. Willy looked at her, his smile vanishing,
"No, gum is for chewing. You try and chew one of these and you'll break all your little teeth off. They sure do taste terrific though." He said, walking off. I handed the gobstopper to an Oompa Loompa and hurried after them.
"And this is hair toffee. You suck down one of these little boogers and in exactly half an hour a brand new crop of hair will start growing all over the top of your little noggin. A mustache, and a beard!"
"Who wants a beard?" Mile sassed.
"Well." Willy thought for a moment, "Beatniks for one, folk singers and motorbike riders? You know, all those hip, jazzy supercool neat kin and groovy cats? Are you hip to the jibe? Are you digging what I'm laying down? I knew you could. Slide me some skin soul brother!" When Mike didn't low-five his outstretched hand Willy glanced uncertainly at me. I playfully rolled my eyes and low-fived his hand. Then let out a yelp as he twirled me into his chest!
"Oh! you got some moves there Willy!" I laughed and shyly tucked some hair behind my ear. He grinned and winked slyly as he released me from his warm grip. Mrs. Beauregarde was glaring at me again, and I could swear I heard some Oompa Loompas sniggering.
Willy leads us to a large machine,
"Watch this." He said excitedly. With a pull of a lever, the machine howled, ground, hissed and popped. We watched as a strip of gum came out. I frowned and tilted my head. That seemed like a lot of work for a strip of gum. Apparently, Mike thought so too,
"That's it?!" He snapped.
"Do you even know what 'it' is?" Willy retorted.
"It's gum." Said Violet, holding it.
"Not just any gum, the best gum in the entire world! Know why? Know why? Because it's a three-course dinner all by itself!" Willy smiled enthusiastically.
"It sounds wonderful!" Charlie said.
"It sounds weird," Veruca said snootily.
"It sounds like my kind of gum," Violet stated. She took out her own and stuck it behind her ear with a huff. I cringed with disgust.
"Um, I'd rather you wouldn't..." Willy began.
"I'm the world record holder for chewing gum, I'm not afraid of anything!" With that, she stuffed it into her mouth and began smacking.
"How is it dear?" Mrs. Beauregarde asked.
"It's amazing! Tomato soup, I can feel it running down my throat!"
"Yeah, spit it out!" Willy said a worried smile on his face.
"I think you'd better-" I began, feeling uneasy. But Violet cut me off,
"It's changing! Roast beef with baked potato, crispy skin, and butter!" Willy seemed to be growing more and more worried. I drew Charlie closer to me.
"Keep chewing kiddo! MY daughter's going to be the first one to have a full gum meal!" Mrs. Beauregarde boasted. Veruca looked green.
"I'm just a little concerned about-" Willy tried again.
"Blueberry pie and ice cream!"
"That part." Willy looked appalled.
"What's happening to her nose?" Asked Veruca. We all looked at Violet's nose. Willy's mouth made an 'oh'.
"It's turning blue." Said Mr. Salt. Mrs. Beauregarde frowned,
"Her whole nose has gone purple."
"What do you mean?" Violet asked in confusion, touching her nose. Veruca smirked haughtily. My eyes widened as it began to spread over her face.
"Violet, your turning violet! What's happening?!" Mrs. Beauregarde cried to Willy. Violet smacked her gum in fear.
"Well, I told you I hadn't got it quite right. It goes a little funny at the dessert." He backed away, "I'm terribly sorry." With that, he ducked behind the machine.
"Mother, what's happening to me?" Violet said worriedly as we backed away. She had fully turned purple and seemed to be swelling.
"She's swelling up!" I stated.
"Like a blueberry." Said Charlie. Sure enough, Violet was swelling to an enormous size. Her arms and head nearly disappeared into her blue flesh. But she kept growing and growing, till she was almost as high as the ceiling. I feared she would grow so much she'd squash us all. To my relief, she stopped before she grew any further.
"I've tried it on 20 Oompa Loompas and each turned into a blueberry. It's just weird." Willy said, popping out from behind Mrs. Beauregarde.
"But I can't have a blueberry as a daughter. How is she supposed to compete?!" Mrs. Beauregarde snapped. I rolled my eyes.
"You could put her in a county fair." Suggested Veruca. Willy grinned, but it faded as he caught sight of Mrs. Beauregarde's face.
Just then, music began to play and the Oompa Loompas walked out of some mist. The music was techno and they were wearing silver leather with some sort of goggles. Willy grinned and offered his hand to me. Thrilled; I took it and he spun me around before we began to dance to the Oompa Loompas song,
"Listen close and listen hard
Dear little Violet Beauregarde
This chewing girl she sees no wrong
Chewing, chewing, chewing, chewing, chewing, chewing all day long!
Chewing, chewing all day long!
Chewing, chewing all day long!
Chewing, chewing all day long!"
I laugh as we spin, twirl, dip and swerve to the beat. I swear Willy was glowing.
"She keeps on chewing till at last
Her chewing muscles grow so fast!
And from her face her giant chin
Sticks out just like a violin!
Chewing, chewing all day long!
Chewing, chewing all day long!
Chewing, chewing all day long!
Chewing, chewing all day long!
For years and years, she chews away
Her jaw gets stronger every day!
With one tremendous chew
They bite the poor girl's tongue in two
And that is why we try so hard
To save miss Violet Beauregarde
Chewing, chewing all day long!
Chewing, chewing all day long!
Chewing, chewing, chewing, chewing, chewing, chewing,
All-day long!"
As we stopped, I was unable to resist staring into Willy's purple orbs. He did the same, and we stepped closer together. It was as if we were trapped in each other's pools, unable to come up to breathe. We were quite close when Mrs. Beauregarde shoved me away and glared at Willy. He shot me a worried glance, then turned to an Oompa Loompa,
"I want you to take the Beauregardes to the juicing room right away, kay?" The Oompa Loompa crossed his arms, then helped his companions with rolling Violet away.
"What are they going to do to her?" Questioned Mrs. Beauregarde.
"Oh, well we have to squeeze all the juice out of her, like a little pimple!" He grinned. Mrs. Beauregarde looked horrified for a second before helping the Oompa Loompas roll her daughter away. I couldn't help but be relieved when she left.
"On with the tour!" Willy said, walking away.Making sure to stay close to me.
