The first sound I was greeted with when regaining consciousness was a continuous ring followed by loud beeping. Everything was pitch black, feeling slowly returning to my numb limbs. My fingernails scratched at the surface beneath my body, hardly able to make out the cold, smooth surface as my senses began to return. All I knew for certain was the darkness. The rising thumping of my own racing heart making way into my eardrums to repress the ringing. My head was throbbing, only becoming more intense as the world finally came into focus.
Everything remained a large blur, my eyes flickering open and shut as they attempted to adjust, only to ultimately fail in doing so. I could only make out colors with a few distinct shapes among the mass of hues bleeding into one another. The room had dark walls, illuminated in green light emerging from various small cylindrical bodies. Each cylinder held a shadow that I could not make out precisely what they were, however, there was one large container whose light made the others feel dim in comparison from its size alone.
My eyes squinted, unable to tell if the humanoid body was inside, or in front of it. What was that? Tendrils? Wires? Were they connected to it or behind it? I could barely see at all past my hazy vision, tears and the mask covering my nose and mouth obstructing my view as I layed there defenceless.
I managed to look over, wrists held down in silver cuffs with an IV by the looks of it stuck into my hand. Electrodes on my chest were keeping track of my heartbeat on the monitor. It was racing, my aching chest rising and falling quick and unsteady as I began to hyperventilate.
Only then did I realize the writhing pain that my body was in, adding to the tears cascading down my cheeks. I felt as if I were on fire.
I flinched as the humanoid figure began to move, struggling to break free but I was trapped. I could not move. The silver cuffs binding my wrists and ankles, including my neck to the metal table would not allow it. I could not scream, my throat too dry. Why was it so difficult to breathe all of the sudden?
As I began to cough and gasp for breath, my head fell to the side with silver spots before my vision. Once it settled, I could see a silver tray with various medical instruments upon it. I could just make out the sight of a scalpel, scissors and two to three syringes.
Is that blood? Is it mine?
I could feel the cold sensation of tears on my face. Now no matter how many times I blinked, the foggy surroundings would not clear up. Eventually it went black as I slipped out of consciousness for who knows how long.
"You're awake." A familiar voice spoke once my eyes managed to open once more. "You shouldn't be up yet."
My vision was just as blurred, if not more than before. It caused my head to pound. The man turned a nozzle on a small tank beside the table, the faint sound of flowing gas rising to my ears.
A faint aroma hit my nostrils, one not particularly vile nor sweet. It hit me that the gas filling the mask was no longer oxygen, it felt heavier, as did my own limbs. I could only watch him, my chest tightening and whimpering when unable to open my mouth.
I tried to move anything but I was falling victim to the gas. Perhaps it was better than staying awake. The pain in my body was dissipating, leaving me almost in a state of bliss. The fear was fading as my mind began to drift from reality. His gloved hand reached out to my head before it jerked back in hesitation and fell back to his side.
The haze faded into darkness, all coherent thought failing my senses. I felt myself drift away, the numbing darkness claiming me as it's victim once again.
