Jema knew something was up with Deanna. The usually smiley and clingy setter is now quiet and seemed like she's always tired. Though she makes it up for it with some obviously fake smiles, the spiker didn't mention it.
"Hey, I'm going to practice with the girls for a bit, later bb."
Jema knew it was a lie. She asked Deanna's teammates if they were practicing but they said they haven't seen Deanna for days. It was suspicious. But Jema still didn't confront Deanna, she knew that the taller girl would tell her once she's ready. She trusts Deanna.
But when she saw Deanna in a café, with a girl she's never seen before, her heart broke.
Why would Deanna lie to her to meet this girl? Why would she hide this from her? Jema shook her head, she shouldn't be thinking this. She knows Deanna would never do anything like that. So that day, she waited on their apartment, telling Deanna they have something to talk about just as the other girl arrived.
"Are you hiding anything from me?"
Worry was evident in Deanna's face. Jema stared at her, waiting for the girl to talk. Every minute felt like hours, the ticks of the clock audible through the silence.
"Who's the girl with you earlier?"
Jema couldn't stop herself from asking, her curiosity killing her. Deanna made up her mind and spoke,
"She's a doctor."
Deanna finally facing Jema, she uttered, tears threatening to fall from her eyes.
"I'm sorry for hiding this from you Jema,"
Jema couldn't hold back her tears after hearing what Deanna just said, crying together, she went over the setter's side and hugged her,
"Jema I can't play volleyball anymore."
