It was pitch black. The only thing I could see were my hands, feeling the cold brush of air against them. Looking around, there was a figure in the distance. Walking towards them, they began to look familiar. "Hello?"

"Hello," They responded.

I was shocked, "The voice!" I started jogging turning into a sprint. I tripped over my feet and fell clear through the floor, suspended in the air, almost like water? I didn't have much time to think on it, the lights blinding me. A figure was standing above me, "Hello? Are you okay?"It was the school nurse, I nodded, she went off to do...something. I don't know.

Someone next to me started coughing, gasping for air. I looked over to the side and it was Jake. He was on the edge of the bed, must've almost jumped off. "Hey, you okay?"

"No I just felt like I was drowning and heard what I'm pretty sure is my soulmate calling me."

"Yeah I'm ok," he said, his voice still raspy. But why did the voice sound like he was answering my question?

"Did you see pitch black while you were out?"

He had a look of shock and nodded quickly, "Did you?" He asked loudly, nearly screaming at the top of his lungs.

I flinched, humming in thought, "Hey soulmate what's your name, your full name."

"Jake Scogin, why?"

I smiled and in a mocking tone, "Hey there soulmate I don't know yet."

It took him a minute, but he seemed overjoyed when he did. "Hello there," the raspiness disappearing, he pulled me closer to him.v

Embarrassed and not sure how to react, I pushed him away. "I don't know you much do I?"

He nodded and pulled back, "Well, why don't we get to know each other then?"

I nod, the dismissal bell rang. I chuckled, "Bus, car, or walk?"

"Bus but I can walk," I nodded and we started walking.

Outside my friend's fire truck red hair flew by, smacking me in the face. "Aspen! What happened are you-" she glared at Jake, "who are you?"

"Alyssa it's ok, remember the legend you would tell me? The legend that everyone at a certain age will talk to their soulmate through thought?"

She grabbed my arm, her death glare still shooting at Jake. "Well he better learn to clean up," she joked, gesturing at his appearance.

"Hey!" Luckily he caught on and took it as a joke.

We continue to walk out, all of us until Alyssa had to leave. I made sure she walked into her house until I apologized to Jake. "I'm really sorry about her, she's kinda protective."

He smiled, "No, no it's ok. She's just protecting you, I think that a good thing."

I put in an AirPod, holding another one in my hand. He put it in his ear. His eyes widened with shock, "Woah, you like country?"

I nod and start singing the lyrics, accidentally letting my accent slip. Him staring at me, acting like he's listening to cover the blushing. "Woah..."

Hearing Jakes thoughts I smirk and kept talking in the accent, "What? The accent?" I giggle, "bless your heart."

He gave a playful glare,"Why don't you speak in the accent more often?"

"It's why those girls bully me ya see. They think I'm not all that smart cause of the accent. I started hidin' it awhile ago, but it didn't matter, they heard it once and never talked to me again." I chuckled, "But they can' even add 2 and 2 without usin' their fingers." He smiled, chuckling along.

We got to my house, mom answering my knocks at the door, "Hello mom." Keeping my accent because of the safety of my home.

She looked at Jake and stepped out the door, "Hello, who are you?" Her voice having a hint of seriousness.

"J-Jake Scogin," he stuttered but smiled. With what was coming next, I don't really blame him for being nervous.

"And Jake what are your grades normally?"

"B's to D's."

Debating on whether or not to accept him, "What do you do out of school?"

"Like hobbies?" She nods and he smiled, his eyes glistening like gold in the sun, "I'm a racer." I tilted my head, "I race down at the dirt track."

My heart melted, loving everything about him, my face went red. Already running to my room I screamed, "Hey mom I have homework I'll be in my room!"
