CHAPTER TWELVE - JULIA

I stood over Nicholas’ ashes, dagger in hand. If my heart actually worked, everyone including Cain and Rachel would be able to hear it pound. I’d returned just fifteen minutes prior with Sam’s ash-covered shirt and teeth. Again, I questioned what in fact we were going to attempt.

Phil stood next to me, tapping his foot. He had the syringe in one hand and the Taser in the other. Electricity arced over the tip, startling me. “Any day now.”

“Okay, geez. Stop rushing me.” I knew Phil wanted to exact his revenge on Nicholas, but I was scared he’d only overpower us and escape. Then we’d never bring Sam back.

“I’m ready.” Mimi held onto the net with white knuckles, eyeing me with way too much excitement. Why wasn’t she afraid?

Luke held the other side. Band-Aids covered the evidence of what Alora had done to his neck. He attempted a smile. “I wish I could just stake him.”

“I know,” I said with a sad smile. “He needs to stay alive.”

“He’s gettin’ a ball busting first before you juice him up, you hear me?” Harry said.

I rolled my eyes and shook my head. “As soon as he’s … whatever he is, I’m gonna do it,” don’t worry.

Phil winked at me, which somewhat calmed my nerves.

I took a deep breath before running the dagger across my palm. My blood bubbled forth and dripped onto the ashes. We collectively held our breath, waiting and watching. Nothing happened.

I sighed, watching my hand heal before my eyes.

“Maybe they have to be tears,” Phil said with narrowed eyes.

I swiveled to him, my jaw clenched. “I am not crying over him—not anymore. Besides, I highly doubt we’ll get any tears from Katie when it’s her turn.”

“Maybe if we burn her Louboutin’s.” Phil’s lips turned up in a sick smile.

Mimi gasped. “No! Never.”

“Hey, now. Let’s not freak out.” Harry shifted his weight.

“Freak out?” I took the syringe from Phil. “I’m bringing back the one person who was supposed to be my guardian and—”

“For a good reason.” Phil leaned toward me, giving me the eye. “If you’ve forgotten, my girlfriend is in hell.”

I bit my lip and looked away. The words stung. Yes, the whole thing was twisted and crazy, not to mentions stupid, but why did we cross the line?

“I knew this mumbo jumbo wouldn’t work,” Harry mumbled under his breath.

“Wait.” Luke pointed at the ash. “Look.”

Steam rose from the ashes before the blood began to boil and catch on fire. The growing whirlwind made standing difficult as the air whipped around us. In the middle of the vortex, the particles formed like magic into that of a body before the wind died down. The ash cracked off Nicholas’ torso revealing pink skin.

“Whoa.” Luke’s mouth gapped open.

Nicholas coughed and rolled over, clutching his stomach. I averted my eyes from his manhood.

“Julia?” He croaked out.

The hand holding the vial shook. How could I do this with all the sorrow in his eyes?

“Do it,” Phil growled.

I shot him a look. “Give me a minute.”

“Julia.” Nicholas rolled to his knees and held out his hands to me. Bloodied tears dripped from his eyes. “I had no idea.”
