Chapter 18!!!
Nate took them to the airport and I sat down to watch a movie with Jenny and Helen. Jenny must have been given a stern talking to by Nate, because she didn’t say two words to me all night. They allowed me to take up the entire couch with a pillow and a very soft blanket.
I was so comfortable and warm that I instantly dozed off to sleep. I awoke to Jenny and Helen having a hushed conversation about Nate so I pretended to still be asleep and listened to what they had to say.
“26 already, I can’t believe that my baby is going to be 26 already.” Helen whispered to Jenny.
Jenny giggled lightly. “It’s not like he’s old or anything mom and he is definitely mature for his age. When Dominic was 26, I couldn’t even get him to change a diaper, let alone run a farm and take on the responsibility of kids that are not his.”
“He came around though and he is a great dad.” Helen crooned.
“He has his moments, but he only changed when I threatened to leave him.” I could tell Jennies voice was sad. “I don’t think Blue knows how great she has it with Nate.” I wanted to jump up and slap her but I decided to play the fly on the wall a little longer.
“Honey, don’t be like that. They fell in love right in front of my eyes. He worships the ground she walks on and she learned to trust and love again through him, and I see the way her eyes light up when she is with him. So please don’t be so quick to judge them. What they have is pure.”
My hormones were starting to get to me and I had to hold back my tears.
“I know he loves her, but I can’t get past that there is something different about her. I can’t put my finger on it mom, she’s just off.”
‘If you only knew honey,’ I said to myself.
“Just drop it Jenny, we were talking about Nate’s birthday. It’s on Thursday so what do you think we should do?” His birthday is three days away. Why did I not know this, why did I not think to ask him?
“We could go to that steak place in town, I know that Nate loves going out for a great steak.” Jenny suggested. I couldn’t hear anything, but I am pretty sure that Helen may have gestured to me because Jenny said. “Oh right”
“How about we grill out here, and invite some of his friends that he never gets to see anymore?” Helen suggested.
“That sounds like a plan mom, it’s settled then. Thursday, say seven pm and we can ask them to bring a dish to pass.” Jenny seemed really good at this whole party planning thing.
“Sounds great dear, I’ll email some of his friends, Nate keeps his passwords in the desk, so I can get them.” It sounded like Helen was a bit of a sneak, she really was very cool. “I’ll go do that now.” I heard her get up and I stayed where I was, not wanting to give myself up. I could hear Jenny was still in the room and it felt like she was watching me.
“What is it about you Blue, I just don’t get it.” I heard her say to herself.
I heard the front door open and could smell the amazing and luring scent of Nate; I couldn’t bring myself to open my eyes just yet.
