Love the Way You Lie

My heart had never been so torn, so pulled apart by its core like this moment.

This one moment.

I stare at the love of my life telling me lies, serenading my ears with words dripping with the black ink of deceit and self preservation. My words quivered as my heart leapt through my mouth and took the reins of my voice.

"Who is it?" I yelled in desperation, my emotions getting the better of me. "Who else are you seeing? Who infected you with the sinful lust I now see so clearly staining your heart, every word you speak to me, every sweet nothing you whisper? Who has stolen the one I love so dearly?"

My heart heavied while my anger rose as I saw his head turn away in shame. He let tears pour down his face, his eyes searching for guidance in the cracks of the wooden floor, searching for answers in the dust atop the shelves.

My patience wore thin as he had yet to speak a word.

"Quentin."

His eyes snapped back to me, fear flitting across his face as if I could snap at any moment. As if I were the villain. My voice became calm as I tried to convince him to speak.

"Who was it?" I couldn't help but allow my voice to break as the concept of unloyalty from the man I held so dear forced its way into my mind.

He exhaled and spoke in a quiet and broken voice "It was Joe."

I slowly gave into the desperation scratching its way to the surface from the depths of my being. I took two strides forward, attempting to fill the empty, silent space between us. He startled and took one step back, guilt clouding his face when realizing his action.

My voice was starting to rise again "Who is he? I do not understand, I don't know anyone by that name! Is he a colleague from work? An ex boyfriend? Please, Quentin, I must know who he is! Who is Joe?"

He stepped forward, his actions seeming resolute but his face telling a story of conflict and hesitance. He seemed to be arguing with an invisible voice in his head, countering his every word. He sighed as he gave in to his morals and leaned down to my ear, as if saying the name aloud was forbidden.

His voice was so whispery I almost missed the name uttered through his almost sealed lips. Even though, I was able to make out the name of my betrayer.

"Joe Mama."
