Kehlani had gained almost twenty pounds and she was needing the toilet so frequently that she couldn't put off telling the school she was pregnant for much longer. She'd used all her bathroom passes for the semester and she was not willing to pee herself in class for the secret. She decided she'd tell the guidance councillor and get them to write her a note. That's why she was anxiously tapping her foot in a waiting room of sorts. She knew once she told them it would get out to the rest of the school pretty quickly when people wondered why she was getting special treatment. As she tapped her foot, a tree branch began tapping the window behind her as the wind picked up. The tree began tapping in the same rhythm her foot was tapping. Kehlani stopped tapping her foot, noticing as the only sound now was the woman at the desk typing on her computer. She frowned. It was just a coincidence, it must have been.
"Miss Vale?" Mrs Jennings, the guidance councillor, called out.
The girl stood, following the woman into her small office.
"What can I help you with?"
"I'm pregnant," she blurted.
"Oh."
"Yeah. I knew I'd have to tell the school eventually but it's getting difficult as I reach the second trimester. Basically I'm needing to pee a lot, like at least once every class," she rambled.
"How far along are you?"
"Like 12 weeks, give or take," she informed. "Can you write me a note or something for this?"
"Yes. This isn't going to get better until a few days after giving birth and even then..." the guidance councillor told.
"Fun," Kehlani muttered.
"If you need any more support during or after, let us know." She paused, reaching into one of the drawers of her desk. "Here's a leaflet about a nearby daycare centre. You're going to need to think about one for when you come back to school after having the baby."
"Thank you," Kehlani spoke, taking the leaflet. She began to read it as Mrs Jennings wrote out her note and emailed her teachers.

Kehlani was exhausted. She realised how much work the pregnancy was going to be and afterwards was going to be worse. She'd have to be tutored from home for a short while before going back to school. She knew the separation from her child would be hard. At least she guessed it would from watching 'Jane the Virgin'.
Closing her eyes, Kehlani lay down on the sofa, hearing the familiar sound of her front door being opened and closed and then the click of the lock.
"Hey, Kehlani," Valeria greeted her older sister with a smile.
Kehlani opened her eyes, smiling back and sitting up.
"Hey, V, what's up?" She asked, moving over so she could sit.
"I got you a cinnamon bun on my way home," she told, handing her a small paper bag. "It's still warm."
"You're the best," Kehlani praised, hugging her tightly.
"Have you thought of names?"
"Not really, I'm only 12 weeks along."
"Never too early, then you can run them by Paul," she replied. "I think Valeria is a good name, just an idea."
"Funny, V," Kehlani responded, rolling her eyes.
