Chapter Six

I woke up around five in the morning from the chaos downstairs. Apparently, Michael had come home. Still in my foggy stage of drowsiness, I helped him get to his room and onto his bed. He kept on mumbled random things and cursing every time he bumped into furniture. As soon as Michael’s snoring filled the room, I went back to my room longing to sink back into my warm bundle of blankets. The heater was off due to an unpaid bill. Which reminded me of the letter pile from the mail...

As I snuggled back under the covers I noticed an out of place object on my desk. Looking closely, I realized it was a crimson apple. Its color was so dark, almost black. Colin must of left it. What was his obsession with red apples anyway? I wondered as I drifted back to sleep.

Colors started to form my dream with purple, red and black. They swirled and danced creating an empty room in front of me. A red apple slowly spun in the air. Nothing held it in place and it seemed to be supported by the thick fog that surrounded it. The apple was a cardinal color and its deepness created a thin layer of dark liquid on the surface. It wrapped the fruit until the apple was a dark color of blood. The liquid surface swirled, quickly dissolved and became stiff. The blood poisoned the life out of the apple. Sucking out the movement and flow, it created a hard and stiff object. It created an evil shine that blinded me as it continued to spin. The fog began to slowly fade and I started to see a figure appear behind the apple. It was a figure of a person. From the wide shoulders to the standing position, I figured it was man. He was dressed in black jeans and a sweater. The hood covered his eyes but I can slightly see the smirk that played on his lips. The man reached out to grab the apple. It stopped spinning and the fog completely disappeared. He opened his mouth to bite into the darkness of the apple. His perfectly white teeth sliced into the hard surface with ease. As he chewed, the dark juice from the forbidden fruit dripped at the corner of his mouth. I gulped the spit that gathered at my cheeks. The man flashed me a toothy grin and smoothly licked the juice from his lips. Suddenly, all went completely black.

I sat up suddenly causing myself a wave of dizziness. Sunshine streamed through the thin curtains. I squinted at my clock, then did a double take. I was late to work! Grumbling I stood up to make my bed. A dark apple rolled off my bed. I placed on my dresser and continued to get ready for work.

Soon, I was rushing into the Mini Mart and came head to head with a customer. I hand pulled me to place before I lost my balance.

“I am so sorry!” My eye widened in apology. Before me stood a girl about my age. She had long strawberry blonde hair and sincere brown eyes. Surprise flickered on her face but was quickly formed to a wide smile,

“No! It’s totally fine,” she waved her hand, “I’m Vanessa, by the way.”

“I should of watched where I was going. Not a good way to meet someone,” I laughed, “ I’m Emma. I work here actually.”

“Oh, I see! Is the handsome guy back there your boyfriend?” Vanessa winked and pulled her purse over her shoulder.

“No, no, he’s like a brother,” I assured, “And I best be going, I am definitely late.”

“Oh! Yes, of course. It was nice meeting you, Emma,” the girl grinned brightly and hurried to her blue BMW.

I ran into the mart to find Ricky on his phone. As soon as he saw me he ended the call,

“I was just calling you! Where were you?”

“Overslept,” I mumbled sheepishly.

“First you’re early, then you’re late. What’s up with that?”
