"May!"
"May!"
There's a boy running at me, his purple jacket flapping behind them. His green hair shines obvious in the light. I couldn't see his face, only his silhouette. He had such a familiar aura. My body and soul urged me to go towards him...
"May!"
His voice was so soothing.
"May! You're gonna be late!"
Huh? What does that mean?
A wave of coolness and discomfort washed over me.
~~
"MAY!" an obnoxious voice yelled. Much to her own disappointment, it was daytime.
"Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay." The nasal voice dragged her name on, making the syllable sound irksome. May found her eyes closed, and pushed them open with what felt like the force of a Machoke.
Sunlight shone through Vigoroth-themed curtains and down onto the wooden floorboards. The shadows of a pair of Taillow flying outside darkened the room for a brief moment.
May looked to where her brother Max was standing with a blanket in his hands. May's blanket. Caroline, their mom, was leaning against the doorframe behind him. A fond smile played at her lips, possibly at seeing how her daughter's eyebrow twitched in annoyance.
"Why did you wake me up?" she groaned, resisting the urge to throw her pillow at Max.
"Why not? Am I interrupting something? Dreaming about a certain rival of yours?" Max teased, wearing a smug smirk. He relished looking down at her. May knew that from years of being his older sister. The urge to throw something at him came rushing back and she had to take a deep breath to reorient herself.
May lifted her head to glare at him. In return, Max threw her a hideously obnoxious little-brother-laugh. Her least favourite sound in the world.
"Alright, that's enough. Max, when you're done reminding your sister that her ship to Johto leaves in two hours, " Caroline shot May a look, "Get the both of you some breakfast. Your dad wants to do some training with you in the Gym." she said. Tossing one last knowing look over his shoulder, Max ran out the door, followed by Caroline shortly after.
'Ship to Johto?' May thought.
"Why would I- OH YEAH I GOTTA GO!" May shrieked, leaping off the mattress. "MOM, I'll eat breakfast on the way to Slateport. Max, put whatever breakfast is on a plate and I'll grab it on the way out." She shouted, frantically dashing through her morning routine.
She threw on the adventuring outfit she hadn't worn since her time with Ash, then haphazardly grabbed and shoved items into her backpack. Pokeballs. Money-bag. Potions. Matches. Camping Gear. Pokeblock case, with some leftover berries in a pocket somewhere. An updated Pokedex and a PokeNav Plus Professor Birch gave to her as a gift a couple of days ago when she went to Professor Birch to get a parcel. Anything really. She got Max's PokeNav upgraded too because she's a good older sister. Max, on the other hand, annoyed the Furret out of her.
May had difficulty choosing which Pokemon to bring to Johto. Beautifly was the easiest decision. It was her star Pokemon and had been with her through so much. Leaving her Normal-type Pokemon at Petalburg would be beneficial to both them and the Gym. Max could use a friend at home too. But Skitty had already spent so much time away from a Contest Hall. She wanted to train up Bulbasaur and Squirtle too, maybe they'd even evolve! She'd never leave her starter and first Pokemon friend behind either. She couldn't.
She decided on Blaziken, Beautifly, Skitty, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle.
She did all this while running around the house, screaming "AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!".
——————————————
"Stupid socks." May cursed under her breath, barely avoiding falling face-first down the stairs. While cramming her feet into a pair of sneakers, May said her goodbyes to her family.
"Did you wear a green bandanna because you were thinking of him?" Max said, waggling his eyebrow suggestively. May wanted to retort, but she had shoved a piece of buttered toast in her mouth. She waited until she had swallowed, before sticking her tongue out at him and then running into the house one last time to change into her usual red bandanna. And this time, no one needs to know she put the green one into her bag.
"Have a nice trip, May! Stay safe!" Caroline said. Her daughter's waving hand was the last her mother saw of her before she ran out of Petalburg Gym.
"Swellow! Use Fly! To Slateport City!"
(Technically, Swellow is too small to ride on, so we're gonna pretend Pokemon expand to the size of Latias and Latios when using Fly outside of battle. This is my book and I do what I want to~)
It's technically Max's Pokemon since he helped catch it as a Taillow, but Dad is torn between training it for the Gym and letting Max permanently have it. 'Maybe Dad's losing more often than he'd like? I thought it's his job to give out Gym Badges anyway, does it really matter if he doesn't win a single match?' May's mind wanders as Swellow lifts off. She takes one last look over her shoulder at her home before facing ahead.
Soaring through the sky, May spread her arms out to feel the winds flowing through the air, harsh as they are when you soar through the sky. Her squeals of adrenaline were lost in the winds, unlike the 'swoosh' of Swellow's wings, which were as loud and clear as engines. Swellow zoomed through the air, occasionally dodging other incoming creatures. It felt like she was riding a roller coaster. She had to readjust her bandanna a few times when it nearly fell off her head.
She took it off.
When they landed, Swellow only stayed on the ground long enough so May could clumsily step off its back. A little irked at how eager it was to drop her of, she waved as it left.
"Well well, look who it is. It's dear Kamo-chan." A sinister high-pitched voice said behind her. There was only one person who could pull that combo off.
"Harley." May turned while putting her bandanna back on. "Are you-"
"I see you're going for the matching couple's look, May." Harley sneered.
"Huh?" May looked down at herself, struggling to notice what Harley saw.
"Your bandanna, May." Harley snickered, watching her smooth out every tiny wrinkle and detail in her clothing. "Green does not match your eyes, Kamo-chan."
"Wah!" May yelped (*insert Waluigi memes*), as her hands darted to pull the bandanna knot loose. She stared at the green fabric in her palm, stunned.
"I-i-I didn't mean to- it was an accident! I just put on the wrong one earlier!" May stammered.
Harley's laughter was all she heard as they walked towards the docks. His loudness infuriated her, so much so she nearly screeched for the second time today. Fuming, May ran ahead of him.
The ship loomed above her. The size of it would've definitely unfazed her had she not been so occupied with her emotions at that moment.
"All aboard the S.S. Eliza, Miss." The attendant greeted as May handed her ticket to him for inspection. May took a deep breath, stepping inside the ship. Time to take the stage again.
