Blaring lights and many people, Mason stood from the top of the staircase to look down at the havoc going down below him. He was only six at the time, but he knew something was clearly wrong. Why were all of these strange men inside of his house? Where were his parents? He took another step down the stairs to be scooped up into somebody's arms and taken back to his room. Mason looked to see who was holding him; it was his father, Marvin. His father sat him down on his bed, "Mason, buddy..." He sighed. He'd clearly been sobbing his eyes out.
Mason was awfully confused by this. His father was strong, he almost never cried and was always a happy soul, "What..?"
His father gazed up with him with sad eyes, "Y-your mother won't be with us anymore.." Mason's reaction was almost emotionless, he didn't understand what his father was trying to say, "Wha-?"
Marvin didn't know what else to say, he was on the verge of tears once again, "You'll just be living with me from now on, alright.?" Mason just looked down at himself, "Okay... She'll be coming back though, right?" Marvin sighed, "Yeah, sure..."
And they both held each other tightly for a minute before Mason's father had to disappear downstairs again. Mason stayed there, he didn't know what to make of the situation at all.
After that night, the both of them were as close as ever. Mason eventually got over not seeing his mother anymore, but it was still in the back of his head as he grew up. Marvin was doing good as a single father. He worked hard, made his son happy and felt content with his life at the time. Everything was wonderful, until the day in Mason's life that would crush him forever.
