No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get warm when I got back to my chambers. I hadn't even finished my chores, but I'd stormed off. Darius wasn't understanding how dangerous it was that someone could have potentially seen us. The fireplace was lit up and I had my covers wrapped around my shoulders, but I was still shivering. I thought it was the cold but that seemed unlikely. I was shivering with fear.
A soft knock at the door made me jump. I calmed once I realised that if someone was here to cart me away, they wouldn't knock. I stood up, dragging the covers with me. I opened it to see a nervous-looking Claude. My eyes widened in shock.
"I've never been down to the servant's quarters before," she said, her breath forming in a cloud because of the cold. "It's quite dark down here. And chilly."
"Yes, we don't have as many candles. What are you doing here?"
"Darius told me about your disagreement earlier," she said softly. I rolled my eyes - he really did tell her everything. "Do you want to talk about it?"
I pondered her offer; I had eaten dinner alone, my bad mood deflecting anyone that had tried to sit next to me. Lisa wasn't back yet, so it was either talking to Claude or being alone again. I decided on the former and opened the door wider for her to enter.
She gasped as she stepped inside, her curious green eyes looking around. "You share this?"
I chuckled at her gaping expression. "It's not so bad. We're hardly in here apart from sleeping." I sat down on my bed and gestured for Claude to sit beside me.
She took my hand, giving it a small squeeze. "Are you okay?"
I shrugged one shoulder. "Someone may or may not have been watching me perform magic in Darius' chambers. Someone may or may not have seen me kiss him. I have no idea of finding out who they were. They could halfway to your parents by now, and I'll be kicked out of the castle by morning."
Claude shook her head. "Dar would never let them get rid of you."
"Like I told him, he has no power over your parents. If they want me gone, I'm gone."
"He's stronger than you think."
"I don't doubt that he's strong, Claude." I picked at a loose threat in my blanket. Darius had shown me just how strong her was numerous times. "But I know how your parents feel about me. They'd be glad to see the back of me."
Silence dawned over us as Claude realised I was probably right. Her parents treated servants very differently to how she and Darius treated them. To the King and Queen, servants were scum and deserved to be treated as such.
"Well," Claude said, hitching her leg up onto the bed so she could face me properly, "Darius' feelings for you won't just disappear overnight. He'd find a way to see you."
I laughed, tears springing to life. "And he'd be disgraced. He would be forever known as the prince who fell in love with a commoner. He'd never be taken seriously."
Claude sighed and leaned forwards, wrapping her arms around me, pulling me close. I clung to her for dear life, feeling like I was drowning in all of the secrets I was forced to hide.
"Gwen, you'll never guess what just hap -" Lisa's screaming excitement trailed off when she saw Claude and I sat in our embrace on my bed.
Claude smiled kindly at Lisa, who made a small squeak. She dropped to the lowest curtsey I had ever seen. I muffled a smile with my blanket as Claude covered hers with her dainty fingers.
