All of a sudden the planchette picked up speed as slid quickly to G-O. Over and over it spelled the word "go".
Aaron laughed, "ok who's moving it, I wanna know." he ruffled his hair with his free hand, "I'm getting sick of this." He was still smiling when Claire took her fingers off the board. It was a second before Sara's reprimands started, "CLAIRE. What did I tell you guys before we started? Don't ever take your hands off the planchette, under no circumstances!"
"I'm sorry! I got scared." Her chest was heaving and her hands were shaking. Mary felt a small relief to know she wasn't the only one scared.
Sara huffed and said, "I apologize for my friend's rudeness. May the rest of us say goodbye?" she shot an annoyed glance at Claire who shrugged.
It flew to YES, then G-O-H-I-D-E-G-O.
Aaron laughed again and raised his eyebrows at Tyler who returned the same look.
They said goodbye in unison and walked toward the stairs as the candle went out. There was a bunch of noises from shuffling and tripping feet when Mary got shoved from someone behind her. "OW! I get it, I'll walk faster but if I fall down the stairs I'm blaming you."
Sara's voice came from somewhere in front of her, "Mary no one's behind you. Are you feeling alright?"
"What? Oh... y-yes I think so." The overwhelming frigid cold had returned.
"Hey! The door's blocked! What the hell is going on Sara? And WHY is it so freezing up here?" came Aaron's voice.
"I-I don't kn-now! We were all in the circle the entire time, so it couldn't be any of us c-could it?"
"What are you saying, someone else is in the house?" came Claire's voice.
"What I don't understand is why we couldn't bring any of our phones up with us Sara. it kinda seems like you planned this," came Mike's deep gravely voice.
"No, why would I-" but her answer was cut off by Claire's shrill scream. Then a heavy thud of a falling body and a crunch of bones followed by another scream, "HELP!" There was a dragging, scraping noise they knew to be Claire getting dragged along the floor, away from them.
"Claire!" yelled Mike, "where are you? I can't see anything! Someone, please find a light!"
"The lighter Sara used to light the candle with!" They all started to grope their hands along the floorboards near the Ouija board when Mary's hands touched something sticky and hot. It was everywhere on the floor. "Oh my god! What is this?"
"Just find the lighter!" came Aaron's voice.
Mary's hand touched something small that she realized was the lighter. "I found it!" But her hands were too slick with the strange sticky substance to light it, "Aaron, I can't..."
She felt him brush by her and she grabbed his shoulder, "here." He grabbed it and flicked it.
A warm golden glow illuminated the space around them. Mary finally saw what it was that her hands were covered with. Claire's blood. "OH MY GOD," she yelled and her hands shook violently. She fell to her knees and retched. Sara started to cry and slumped down next to her, "this is all my fault."
Aaron touched Mary's shoulder and the warmth from his hand seeped into her. When the nausea subsided, Aaron helped her to her feet.
They walked over to the circle, leaving Tyler to comfort Sara, and Mike idly calling out Claire's name.
There on the floor, written in blood were the words "yOU weRe waRneD". Mary clasped her hand over her mouth and Aaron stood staring at the words. Suddenly, at an alarming speed, the planchette started to trace the words G-O-R-U-N-G-O.
Mary screamed and Aaron put his arm around her to try to quiet her.
Sara asked shakily, "wh-whats happ-pened?"
Aaron shook his head in disbelief, "the planchette... it moved on its own, and it-it still is."
At that moment there came a blood-curdling scream from the other side of the attic that made them all jump, then came a low guttural growl, "get out." The growl seemed to come from everywhere and yet nowhere at all. They all scrambled to the blocked doorway, Sara still crying. Amidst the chaos, Aaron dropped the lighter and the attic plunged once more into darkness.
Mike's scream came as no surprise to them as he was in the rear. The same sickening thud, crunch, and dragging occurred to him as it had Claire.
With a massive push from the remaining four, the blockage cleared and they all tumbled down the stairs. They all landed on one another in a jumbled mess.
For a moment all was quiet except for Sara and Marys' quiet sobs. Then above them, something slid back over the opening to the attic, sealing Claire and Mikes' bodies inside like a tomb.
After that night, none of the surviving four ever told a soul about what happened up in the attic.
They told Claire and Mike's parents that the two lovers ran off after that night so that they could be together and start their lives over from scratch. Which, was true in part.
The attic door never again opened to another living soul, but if you were to walk by the steps, you could smell the faint stench of rotting flesh.
To this day Mary and Sara continue to wonder if the planchette still traces the letters G-O-R-U-N in the pitch-black darkness.
