Today I will be brave, today I will put my past behind me. 3 years ago both my parents died. Then 8 months ago so did my grandmother, the only family I had left.

I was an orphan but during my grandmother finally days we made sure I was emancipated, so I could look after myself.

After missing a whole year of school I decided it was right to go back. I hadn't even been in the town of Mystic Falls.

Lucky I could drive so I could get to school easier. I wasn't looking forward to seeing everyone again, I hadn't even told them I was back.

I had to go to the main office to find out where I should go. Being an year behind meant I missed a lot. I put on a smile and got out of the car.

The hall ways were packed, new faces along with old ones. No one seemed to be watching me which was just what i wanted. Maybe everyone had forgotten about me.

"Oh my god, Em" i stopped when i heard Caroline coming towards me, with her arms out. "Why didn't you tell us your were coming back? It's Elena's first day back too" she drew away and pointed to Elena and Bonnie, stood by the lockers.

"I meant too but i should see if Elena is okay" i felt like shit for forgetting about Elena and her parents, she stayed and dealt with her pain and i ran away.

"Emilia? We didn't know you were back this year" Bonnie says as i hugged her.

I faced Elena and gave her a hug. "I'm sorry for being a shitty friend and not being here"

"Don't worry about it. I know what you're going through" she patted my back.

"Oh you poor things" Caroline sighed and hugged both Elena and I.

"Hate to break this up but i need to go to the office and find out where i should be" I said.

"See you at lunch" Bonnie asked.

"Of course" i gave her one last hug and went on my way.

A few people were ahead of me in the line, i pulled out my phone while i waited. "Excuse me? is this the office" I looked up from my phone to see a boy before me. His hair was a light brown but his eye were hidden by sunglasses.

"Yeah, are you new here?" I pushed my phone inside my pocket and took him in. He was wearing jeans and a leather jacket.

"yeah, just moved up here to be with family" he smiled and held his hand out.

"Oh fashioned. I like it, I'm Emilia" i laughed and shook his hand.

"Stefan" he smiled, something about him made me want to know him.

"Miss, you're next" the receptionist called out.

"Speak later?" i asked to Stefan.

"love too"

I stored all my classes out but when they asked for an emergency contact, everything went wrong. "I don't understand? Everyone has an emergency contact. What about an family member?"

"If you read my file you would see that i have no family left and that i am emancipated."

The receptionist looked embarrassed when she looked at my file and saw the whole truth of my messy life. "That'll be good then, you can go to class"
