prologue
I am alone. Three years ago my parents died in an accident then one year after that my grandmother died. My only surviving family hate me, they wanted what was left to me, money and a house. I used to be close with my family, my cousins Viki and Matt but even looking back with grown eyes I could see the tension in our family. Our family is old and slightly well off, my father invested his money and married well, his brother spent the money fast, in the end the only thing he had left was a family name even his kids don't claim.
In that way I am completely alone, the last Maxwell standing.Seattle held me while I grieved, it mended my broken heart. I didn't know it had until I woke up one morning and knew I had to return home. Home. I hadn't called it that in all the time I had been away.
The Maxwell family home was just how I remembered it, more dusty of course but still the same. I cleaned, put things back where they belonged, I puffed the pillows up and put my father's favourite on his chair like he would return at any moment.
In was dark by the time I had finished, I grabbed the keys to my fathers old jeep and drove to The Grill, the roads and streets were almost empty, save a few people walking around. Inside was near empty too, I sat down at the bar, taking a quick sweep of the menu.
"How can I help you" I looked up, "Emilia Maxwell, we haven't seen you for a while".
"Jake Owen" I said putting the menu down. "Yeah it's been a while".
"So what have you been up too?" he asked, leaning forward.
"Seattle. I needed to get away" I told him.Jake looked uncomfortable, even if he was the one who brought the topic up. "So what can I get you?" he asked, I gave him my order, "Coming right up" he said and went to the kitchen to start on the order.
I hadn't expected to get recognised so soon, Jake had been in the same year in school as me, we had graduated the year I left. My cousin Viki should be in her final year now, maybe offering to pay for college would be a good olive branch or maybe they'll just hate me more.
While waiting for my food, I looked around The Grill, no one who really knew me was here so I was able to relax. Sat on the other end of the bar was a man I had never seen before, anyone could have moved into town while I was away but who moved to Mystic Falls.
"Hi" I called over, sliding over to sit closer to him.
He looked up from his drink, his golden brown eyes meeting mine.
"Hi" he smiled back. While I ate we talked, he asked why I had left Seattle (I just felt like I had too), I asked him why he was here (he had some family business), he asked me what my plans were now I was home (I said I didn't know but my real plan was to live off my inheritance until it ran out), I asked if he wanted to come back to my place, (he did).

His name was Elijah, I liked the way it sounded, we were stood on the porch as I search my bag for the house keys. Finally I found them smiling I unlocked the door.
