After enduring the seemingly endless orientation, Cassidy longed for it to come to a close, just like her fellow students. The monotony of the presentation had grown tiresome, leaving everyone restless and eager to stretch their legs and start the real learning experience they had come for.
Following the orientation, everyone was handed their name stickers, and Cassidy seized the opportunity to approach the male she had finally learned the name of. With a small smile, she strolled beside him.
Oblivious to the fact that his father was infamous in the super world, she approached him without any hint of hesitation. And knowing Cassidy's nature, she probably wouldn't have cared regardless—ignorance was bliss, after all.
As she made her way towards the male, whispers and furtive glances followed her movement. Her fellow freshman spectators couldn't help but fix her with curious and bewildered looks, their gossip-filled glances making their confusion apparent.
Standing next to him, Cassidy casually dropped the name, "Warren, huh?" Her sudden approach surprised him, causing him to visibly flinch. He shot her a scowl in response, clearly unappreciative of her boldness.
Her blunt comment had clearly taken him aback. He exhaled an annoyed huff, his irritation evident as he replied, "Didn't you take the hint?" It was clear he wasn't interested in prolonging their conversation, but Cassidy didn't seemed fazed by his grumpy demeanor.
Cassidy grinned at the male, her tone full of playful tease. "I did respect it—but I figured you deserve at least a little credit for being my motion sickness savior." Her smile remained fixed on her face as she watched for his reaction.
Warren's tight smile was paired with a firm warning, "Good, well now you know. Don't get any ideas, we're not friends." Cassidy raised her hands in a gesture of surrender, and she took a small step to the side, widening the distance between them.
The journey to the gym continued in relative silence, with Cassidy choosing to keep her thoughts to herself for the moment. She walked just a few inches next to Warren without any intention of moving away. Her lack of distance seemed to be more out of a nonchalant attitude than anything else.
While the other students chit-chatted amongst themselves, Cassidy refrained from joining the conversation. She was keenly aware that as soon as she revealed her last name, the conversation would undoubtedly come to a swift halt.
A blinding light and a deafening sound erupted behind the group of freshmen, causing all of them, including Warren, to instinctively duck down as a colossal comet streaked over their heads.
A chorus of excitement and awe filled the air as they all gasped at the sight. The figure standing behind the solitary podium was a woman clad in white, radiating an air of elegance and grace.
The woman standing before them introduced herself with a warm smile, "Good morning. I am Principal Powers." The freshman students quieted down as she spoke, their faces filled with anticipation. " On behalf of the faculty and staff, welcome to Sky High," she continued. "In just a few moments, you will embark on the initial stages of your heroic journey through Power Placement."
Principal Powers had dropped a bomb on the group before swiftly departing in a blur of speed, leaving no opportunity for any questions. Everyone was left in momentary stunned silence, trying to process the rapid and unexpected announcement.
The group of freshmen turned their attention to find a stout man standing before them, clad in a gym outfit and donning a hat that looked ready to burst as his untamed hair defied the cap's purpose.
"My name is Coach Boomer, but you might know me as 'Sonic Boom,'" the man announced, his voice booming confidently. He paced forward, his gaze intently locking with each one of them. "Here's how Power Placement will work. You will step up here"—he gestured to the space before him—"and demonstrate your power. And yes," he reiterated, "you will do it in front of the entire class."
After Coach Boomer had wrapped up his speech, his eyes landed upon Cassidy, his gaze fixating on her nervous demeanor. She swallowed visibly, taking a long, dramatic gulp, bracing herself for the imminent demonstration.
"You! In the back!" Coach Boomer called out, singling her out as the class dispersed, leaving her in full view. Cassidy nodded timidly and approached the platform, her heart thumping in her chest. Standing before the coach, she was keenly aware of his quick assessment of her nervous stance.
Coach Boomer fixed his gaze upon her, demanding, "What's your name?"
"Cassidy." As she spoke her name, Coach Boomer acknowledged with a nod, perusing his clipboard meticulously. However, his reaction changed upon discovering her last name, causing him to take a step back and clear his throat. Cassidy, keenly aware of the significance behind his movement, couldn't help but frown. The other students, confused by his reaction, remained oblivious to the underlying reason.
Before Coach Boomer could finish his question, "What's your power—" his words were abruptly cut off as Cassidy's eyes flared up in a blinding white hue. In a swift and unexpected move, her stare sent a surge of energy that sliced through the air, effortlessly severing the hair on his head. Coach Boomer could only recoil in surprise, feeling the cool draft of air on his newly shorn locks. Evidently, now he had a practical reason to wear his hat.
The other students erupted in laughter, amused by the unexpected turn of events. However, Cassidy felt no remorse for her actions. In fact, she found herself lacking any hint of an apologetic bone in her body. Without missing a beat, she nonchalantly responded to Coach Boomer's unfinished question as he stood there, attempting to recover from the shock of his impromptu haircut.
"Photokinesis," Cassidy explained, gesturing to the power she possessed. She knelt down and picked up Coach Boomer's fallen hat, offering it back to him with a small smile. "I can control light," she continued. "Still working on my aim, though."
Coach Boomer chuckled nervously, accepting his hat and putting it back on his head, trying to maintain composure despite the realization of who he was dealing with. His choice to keep the hat in its rightful place reflected not fear but rather a sense of righteousness.
Coach Boomer nodded, still a bit flabbergasted by her power and identity as he called out, "Hero!"
