After school, it was still raining

After school, it was still raining. It was heavier now. The rain thudded and padded against the tall, wide windows of the school cafe, almost fogging up the students' view. It's been twenty minutes since Jimin went with Jeon Jungkook to basketball practice, and you were now in the cafe, lounging with your AirPods in, trying to write a History paper and, unsurprisingly, failing to concentrate.

The cafe was always quieter after school. You liked it this way.

"Hey, [...]... hey. Hellooo.." It took you a minute to realise Hobi was calling your name. You glanced up quickly, picking your AirPods out of your ears. He grinned at you, sidling into the seat in front of you. "I called your name like a hundred times."

"Ahhh, sorry," you grumbled, and he chuckled. You set your AirPods on the table, mood suddenly shifted at the presence of Jung Hoseok. You slouched back into the chair and smirked at him. "What are you doing here, anyway?"

He shrugged. His eyes closed briefly. When they opened again, something serious had installed in them. Then, he said, "Taehyung."

Taehyung.

Your heart ached.

"He, uhh, he wanted to spend some time taking photos at the school. Or something," Hobi shrugged again, like it was no big deal. But a restlessness had settled over him that you were positive hadn't been there before. It's been weird for Hobi, since you and Taehyung... broke up. He was your friend before he was Taehyung's, but, after coming to know him through you, they grew closer and realised they got along well. You were pleased at the time in discovering this, feeling proud that you'd managed to do at least this one good in the world.

Hobi was the kindest of souls.

But... now... after June... you wondered if he begged God for a way out of this emotional mess. Being your friend, being Jimin's friend, being Taehyung's friend—he was trapped in the crossfire.

In this line of thought, you wondered if there was anyone else the situation with you and Taehyung was causing trouble to. Namjoon, your student Physics tutor who you came to know through Taehyung, became your friend prior to the dating scenario. Yoongi, who knew Tae and Jimin equally well, and has known you since you guys were in kindergarten. (He is a family friend.) Jin, Taehyung's best friend since seventh grade, was a continuous pain in your ass for the whole five months you were dating--but, you realised in these recent months, that you have missed the meaningless banters you used to have with Kim Seokjin. You've missed how you called each other names and sent death threats to each other, constantly getting on Tae's nerves whenever you two were in the same room: Tae was often annoyed. Actually, no. He pretended he was often annoyed, but mostly it was obvious he was merely entertained. He probably found the whole spectacle hilarious. You remembered, his face would light up in the halo of a laugh whenever you rendered Seokjin speechless... you had a thing for rendering almost anyone and everyone speechless. Even Jimin.

The only person you were never been able to catch off-guard was Kim Taehyung.

Hobi was checking his phone now, head ducked slightly. His hair was a deep brown, wavy bangs atop his forehead. Sending a text?

You tried to catch a glimpse of who he was texting, but he caught you, head snapping up. He twisted the screen away, peering at you dramatically.

"Hey, don't do that. That's rude," he drawled. "Didn't your mother teach you not to peep on people's privacy?"

"Who you texting, anyway?" You shot back, mimicking his tone.

He blinked. Looked down. His final reply was to shake his head, as he kept texting, type-type-typing away with one hand.

Curiosity was eating at you.

"Who?" You demanded, a whine breaking from your throat.

He cracked up, "I'm not telling you."

"You're so mean. Why're you so mean to me all the time, honestly?" You mumbled, picking your AirPods back up and fitting them into your ears. You reclined back in your seat, checking for Hobi's reaction; he was chuckling silently. You reached for your laptop and tried to refocus on your History paper, while pop music played in your ears.

"Hey... I think I should go now," Hobi's voice was somewhat muffled through the music that blasted through your head. He finally slipped his phone away and stood up. "Taehyung is almost done."
