Chapter 3
“You’ll be safe in America.”
“No safer than I would be here.”
“This is bigger than you, Aaron. This is for the family.”
“For the family? So if I leave, the family will be safe?”
“The family and the country.”

Cameron and I don't talk for the next few days. But something’s changed, I can feel it. There’s no tension between us anymore.
I can feel myself changing, too. Something’s.. different. I feel stronger. Which is saying alot, because I’m skinny.
I realized something was different Friday after school. I was sitting in my room, doing math homework. I didn't realize anything until I closed the textbook. That was the first time since my move to America that I understood math and actually completed the homework.
This was too much. I took out my notebook. I drew. For hours.
That night, I had another nightmare.
I was running. I didn't know where I was. It was dark all around. I looked behind me. I couldn't see them. But they were coming. I could feel their breath, I could feel them tasting the air behind my feet. There, in front of me, was my house. My home in Portugal. I sprinted to the front door and pulled on the handles. They didn't move. I pulled and pulled. I still couldn't see them. But they were there, in the shadows, waiting. The doors suddenly opened and my parents were standing there. I tried to get past them, into the house.
“No, Aaron.” My mother held up her hands to block me. She was as solid as a wall; I could not push past her, or my father.
“Let me in! They’re going to get me!” I shouted.
My father spoke. “Aaron, relax. Join us.”
That’s when I noticed their eyes. White. Pure, whiteness. They’d gotten my parents. I turned to face the darkness. I could feel them moving, waiting for me to give in. When I turned around again, my parents were hanging by their wrists from the ceiling in the entrance hall. They weren’t breathing. A voice echoed around my head. It was one of them, speaking to me.
“You sssssee what you havvvve done? Ifff you had givvven in, you would havvvve sssssavvved your dear parentssss.” It hissed. “Join ussss, Aaron. We will givvvve you peaccce and resssst.”
I turned back to face the darkness where they were hiding. I was trapped. The darkness was creeping closer to me, and I knew that if it reached me, they would have me.
“I will not give in!” I screamed with all I had. It wasn’t enough. The darkness was just a couple yards from where I stood on the front step of the house.
“We will find you Aaron. You cannot run forevvver...” The voice trailed off and I sit bolt upright in my bed.
I turn on a light. I'm in the attic in my aunt and uncles house. I'm safe. For now.
