"M-Matthew I'll be fine now!" She struggled against his grip as he drug her through the trees.

"The last time you said that you ran the wrong way Mia!" He said angrily over his shoulder.

She flinched at his snap, something she never did. Then again, he had never snapped at her, or needed to. Something was wrong.

She grew more frantic as they grew closer and closer to her home, just outside their borders.

"M-Matthew it's fine--"

They slipped through the bushes, coming straight onto the yard. Matthew froze.

On her driveway was a large, white moving truck, furniture and other things cluttered on the lawn and driveway. Her parents stepped from the house.

He slowly turned to Mia, her head down.

"What is happening Mia?" He asked coldly.

She swallowed.

"I told you I was fine." She mumbled.

"Answer my question Mia!" He barked. "Why is there a moving truck on your driveway!?!"

She flinched.

"It's because I'm leaving." Her mother's voice came from behind him.

He whirled around, glaring icily at her mother, who was nearly a spitting image of Mia, except for her eyes.

"Why?!?" He barked, pulling Mia behind him.

"My husband and I need a few years apart, the marriage isn't working out." She said simply.

"Then why can't Mia stay with her dad?!"

"She needs to learn how to be a proper lady, and because of her father, she's too much of a rowdy child." She stepped towards them. "Come here Mia."

She began to step out from behind Matthew's back. He snarled, pressing her further into his back, walking backwards from her mother.

"NO! I WON'T LET YOU TAKE HER!!" He screamed.

Suddenly, he was lifted into the air, Mia slipping from his hands. He looked to see his father and mother behind him, his father holding him by his armpits.

His father was a large man, body built of nothing but muscle, his jaw sharp enough to cut skin with a graze. His ruby eyes were like his, but colder and hard. His hair was inky black, the same as a moon and starless night.

Remorse flickered in their eyes as he placed him by his side, shaking hands with her mother.

"It was lovely to know you Rianna."

Her mother nodded kindly, taking a whimpering Mia's hand.

"Come on sweetie, let's go."

NO!!" Matthew screamed, yanking against his father's grip. "MIA NO!! COME BACK!!"

He could hear her sobs before she ripped her hand from her mother, running and leaping into Matthew's chest.

He wound his arms around her, his father releasing his hand. His chest sagged in relief until she pulled away, kissing his cheek and smiling a forced, sweet, sad grin.

"I'll see you someday." She choked out.

She slipped from his arms, rushing back to her mother.

"MIA!!!" He screamed, his father's hands coming to hold his shoulders, restraining him as he thrashed. "MIA COME BACK!! DONT LEAVE ME!!

She hopped into the car.

"MIA!!"

He broke free of his father's grip as the car began down the road, bolting after the vehicle, his legs pumping, screaming her name.

The car gained distance, the engine revving. Her face peeked past the dark glass, tears spilling down her cheeks.

His lungs began to hurt, his legs turning to jelly. He couldn't go on. He slowed to a stop, gasping as her face disappeared into the distance. He stared into the dust fogged horizon, his hands curling into fists. Anger began to coil in his chest, flooding through his body.

A gentle hand cupped his shoulder.

"Let's go home sweetie." His mother's voice whispered sweetly. "You're probably tired---"

He slapped her hand from his shoulder.

"Don't you dare call me that." He snarled.

The shock of his mother was like too much perfume, flooding his nose.

"Matthew! Don't you dare speak to your mother like that!" His father barked.

He slapped away his hand when it came to rest on his shoulder.

"Screw off old man." He snarled, glaring coldly as he brushed past them.

He passed the house, snarling at Mia's father, who flinched under the young boy's gaze.

He stormed into the forest, shifting and bolting, taking his anger out on any innocent animal to cross his path.
