While she was younger, learning Korean for was difficult, she knew some phrases and wasn't very confident in her speaking ability. She, at the age of 16 moved to Korea, she was still struggling with the language. She then took many classes to help with her Korean, after going she is fluent in the language. At a concert, she had been spotted by someone on the CEO of RBW Entertainments managing team, they suggested that Minsun try out. At 19, she was a trainee at RBW Entertainment, her name "Iris" comes from its meaning of a rainbow like appearance and that is what Minsun wanted to give.
