darling, love makes you do stupid things

"y/n you must come over after school today! marilla said i could invite you and diana over for tea and that's the most divine and grown-up thing i could ever think of. i've been starting to convince myself that being a woman isn't such a chore after all. i'm going to make a splendid display and i wouldn't want it to go to waste!" anne rushed over to you as soon as you set foot into the schoolroom.

you giggled and nodded your head. "of course i'll come, anne."

"y/n's coming to tea with us? oh, how delightful," diana came up to you two, grinning her warm, shining smile.

"after school it is," you stated.

✧・゚: *✧・゚:*

as you neared the cuthbert's home alongside diana, jerry baynard, the help, stared down at the two of you. you couldn't lie — he was cute. you smiled at the boy, but you could tell that his focus was on your best friend.

"hello ladies," he said charmingly, looking down at the two of you from the barn.

"hello," diana replied.

"hello, jerry," you said happily.

jerry paused for a moment to stare down at diana before speaking again. "diana, tu es la plus belle fille que j'aie jamais vue." (*i used google translate. i take french but it's not this complex yet haha*)

jerry glanced at you for a second as you furrowed your eyebrows. you weren't fluent in french, but from the short lessons diana had given you, you could only understand that he said "beautiful". you frowned as she proceeded to call him bold.

"let's go, diana, anne's waiting for us," you said grimly.

confused with your new tone, diana and jerry exchanged another look before she followed you to the home.

"diana! y/n! i'm so overjoyed you're finally here. allow me to take your coat and hats," anne said fancily, causing you and diana to laugh.

"thank you," the two of you said, handing her the two clothing accessories.

you then followed her to the table, which was filled with decorations and treats. the sight made you smile. "anne, this looks marvelous," you said excitedly.

"your table is exquisite," diana added.

"how nice of you two to say. won't you please sit down whilst i set the tea to steep and fetch the cordial? there are ever so many responsibilities when one is hosting company," anne said nicely.

you and diana both sat down at the beautiful table, each of you admiring the dedication and treats that had been made specially for you.

a minute later, anne returned with a bottle of a red drink, which you had all believed to be raspberry cordial. as you both lifted up your glasses, she poured the three of you the red drink in which you all drank happily.

you had a conversation about winter and france. diana spoke a few phrases in french, reminding you of jerry. however, your thoughts were soon clouded over when everything seemed funny and light-hearted. the three of you laughed stupidly, clear as day that it was not in fact raspberry cordial you had drank.

"guys, we have to go upstairs. i have an... idea!" anne's words dragged out and diana giggled.

"i think...i think i'm gonna take," you started to laugh, "a walk. i'll be upstairs in a jiffy!" you exclaimed, sloppily making your way to the door and stepping outside into the snow. "jerryyyy!" you yelled with a soft laugh, causing the boy to peak his head out of the barn in confusion.

"y/n? what are you doing?" he asked in his cute accent, raising one eyebrow.

"i wanna...talk," you kept making your way over to the barn.

jerry climbed down the ladder as you made your way to the entrance. you tripped into the doorway, him having to catch you to make you stable.

"woah, y/n. are you alright?" he asked with a concerned tone. he had that look on his face that he always got when he was confused.

"i'm great! aren't you just great, bestie?" you asked him.

"bestie? i don't really know what you're talking about," jerry stated. your behavior was throwing him off.

"don't you love being just friends? i sure do," you said, trying to climb the ladder but practically falling every time, jerry trying to help you.

"what? are you drunk?" he asked.

"you know, you're cute," you said as he caught you for the third time, his hands around your waist. you turned around to face him so that your faces were barely inches apart.

"o-oh, uh...m-merci," he stuttered, staring at you before you shoved his arms around your waist down and walking away.

"there you go with your french dialect AGAIN! why don't you just go talk to diana? she speaks french and she's the prettiest. you like her more anyway," you slurred, starting to walk out of the barn. before you could make it out, you felt a hand grasp your wrist, pulling you back.

"y/n wait," jerry said, spinning you around to face him.

"what, bestie?" you used the term again more so to "friend zone" him, even though he was the one doing it to you originally.

jerry sighed before brushing a strand of hair behind your ear. "you're the one i like."

"so why did you call diana beautiful? it's soooo obvious you're in love with her. but it makes sense that you would because she's sweet and per—" your thoughts were cut off by jerry's lips on yours.

after a second of a kiss, jerry spoke. "i hope you were sober enough for me to do that. and the only reason i went after her was because i thought i had no chance with you."

you stared at him in shock before hearing anne's voice yelling.

"y/nnnn? where are you? we have to show you something AMAZING!" she called out. diana's laughter followed soon after.

"see you later, jerry," you giggled, winking at the boy before making your way (or at least trying) back to the house where anne and diana were waiting.
