-Christmas 1983-

Over the last couple weeks Bobby and Karen slowly started to add more and more kids things to the house and managed to get all the kids into a bit of a routine. Karen would spend the mornings with all three of the kids helping Dean with his hand writing and the two of them trying to get the twins to eat and crawl to them. In the afternoon Dean would wander out to the yard with lunch for Bobby and watch as Bobby fixed one car or another.

Today they all decided to make snowmen and then Bobby and Dean started a snowball fight. Karen called them both in a couple hours later to warm up by the fire with cups of hot cocoa. After lunch they sat down around the tree to open gifts.

Dean looked wide eyed at the gifts placed in front of him and smiled wetly at Karen and Bobby hugging them before diving in with gusto. He got a few new outfits, some hot wheels cars, and a remote control car. At the last he let out a gasp of excitement as he unwrapped the last.

Marisa squirmed in Karen's arms reaching for the paper on the gift in Karen's hand. She surprised everyone when she found purchase and ripped the paper. Sam after watching Marisa did the same to the gift in Bobby's hands. The twins got matching sleepers, a few toys, some new outfits, and new teething rings.

The rest of the day was spent with the kids playing with their new toys while Bobby and Karen made dinner. Just as they were all sitting down to eat the phone rang.

"Singer's Salvage," Karen answers.

"Hey Karen, it's John," John says.

"John Winchester," Karen says annoyed.

"Don't start with me woman," John snarks.

"Excuse me. What did you just call me?" Karen asks in outrage.

Bobby rushes over and takes the phone ushering her back to the table.

"What in the sam hell did you say to her?" Bobby asks.

"Nothing," John says.

"She don't get that tone over nothin'," Bobby says.

"I didn't wanna listen to whatever speech she had planned I just wanna talk to my son," John says.

"Well, you can talk to him but I don't think he'll be talkin' to you," Bobby says.

"What's that supposed to mean?" John asks.

"He still ain't talkin'," Bobby says.

"Well put him on anyway. Never know he might talk for me," John says.

"Alright let me get him," Bobby says turning to Dean, "You're dad wants to talk to ya kiddo."

Dean hops off his chair and walks over to where Bobby has knelt down with the phone.

"Here he is John," Bobby says.

"Hey Bud, you bein' good for Bobby and Karen?" John asks.

"Mmhmm," Dean hums in affirmation.

"No one's bein' mean to ya are they?" John asks.

"Mh-mh," Dean hums in negation.

"Did you have a good Christmas?" John asks.

"Mmhmm," Dean hums again.

"Did you get everything you wanted?" John asks.

"Mh-mh," Dean hums shaking his head with a sad look on his face.

"What did you want Bud?" John asks.

Dean stays silent staring at the phone.

"Come on Bud, talk to me," John says starting to sound irritated and desperate.

Dean opens and closes his mouth several times but no sound escapes. Tears filling his eyes is enough for Karen. She crosses the room and pulls Dean into her arms laying her head atop his facing the phone.

"He wants his mother back. Wants to be held in her arms and hear her sing or read to him again. He wants you here since he knows he can't have her. You're such an idjit. Your kids need you and you're off doin' god knows what for god knows how long. Your son needs his dad. He's already lost his mother and now he's afraid he'll lose his dad too, and you're too busy runnin' from your pain or drownin' yourself in a bottle. Since you're so wrapped up in yourself we'll take care of them. Treat them as our own. Be the parents they so desperately need," Karen says venomously.

"Keep your eye on the mail I sent somethin' to make up for not bein' there," John says, "Be good Bud."

The line goes dead and Bobby hangs up the phone before coming over and joining the hug. Once Dean is composed again they move to the table for dinner. After dinner they sit in the living room and watch Rudolph the Reindeer. By the end Dean is asleep and Bobby carefully carries him up to put him to bed before helping Karen settle the twins into bed. With small smiles Bobby and Karen head to bed.
