I woke up with a sharp pain in my abdomen. Contraction. I was nearing my term now. So contractions occasionally were common. I still had 2 more weeks to go, though.
I sat up for a while. Sky was peacefully sleeping next to me. I switched on my table lamp to see the time on the bedside digital clock. It was 2 am in the morning. I sat for some more time. Breathing. The pregnancy was now making it difficult for me!
Just when I was about to lie down again, another pain passed through. It was a bit sharper than before. I knew I still had two weeks until I was due, but the contraction I just had made me think otherwise. I decided to wait and time this contraction.
Another wave came exactly 25 minutes later. That's when I decided to wake Sky up.
Sky woke up immediately with a single tap. Seeing me clutching my belly, he quickly came to my side, trying to palpate my swollen abdomen.
"Anything wrong, Tay? "
" I've had two contractions. Really strong ones. Twenty five minutes apart."
He immediately lifted up my night gown to the level of my chest to properly palpate my abdomen, signing me to lie down.
One of the perks of being a doctor!
After a few minutes of examination, he looked up at me.
"The head is engaged, Tay. May be it's time. But we-"
"Oh God!" I whimpered as the pain hit me again, this time stronger. And I clutched my belly tighter, as if that would lessen it.
"What are the chances that I might be in labour, Sky? "
My voice was squeaky, still recovering from the strong contraction I just had.
He didn't say anything. He lifted me up, one of his hands supporting my legs and the other under my shoulders.
"Sky! I can walk! Put me down! " I protested.
" No Tay. You ARE in labour." He said in the most sober voice he could speak in, while carrying a pregnant woman.
I knew I was heavy. Pregnancy makes one gain a lot of weight in little time!
He put me in the passenger seat of his car and quickly drove us off to the hospital. I whimpered once again as the contraction hit me. The time between my contractions was reducing now. I surely was in labour!
I was wheeled in to the private labour room immediately once we reached the hospital. Jane was waiting for me in the room.
"Early arrival! Is it?" She joked with me.
"Yeah! Probably! Seems the kid is pretty much impatient!"
She made me change into the hospital gown and lie down on the table.
She then started her usual instruction lecture.
" Relax , Jane. It's me! I know all that!" I tried to calm her down. Of course I knew the entire process! I was a neontologist for Lord's sake!
"Yeah, Tay! I know! But how many times do you get to see your best friend on the delivery table with you being her obstetrician?" She teased me.
I tuned out of her blabbering and concentrated on the contraction I was having now. It was stronger than before. I don't think it'll be long before I start pushing!
I was soon joined by my husband, who was now all dressed up in scrubs and looked every bit of the dashing obstetrician that he was! All the signs of sleep now gone from his features.
