Thomas Chandler was sitting in his office at his desk as he gazed out at the pictures on his desk of his family. Leaning back in the chair he was sitting on, he was rhythmically tapping with the back of a pen on the surface of the desk, brooding. It had been weeks since the sinking of the USS Nathan James and he himself narrowly escaping death. Something a few of his shipmates and his friends were not so lucky to do. Their names ran through his head as he sat there brooding. First it was Frankie followed by a long list of names he wished he could remove and bring back to life. Darien, his late wife, Jed, his father. Rachel... Bivas, Cosetti, Carlton Burke, Andrea Garnett... Maya Gibson who died trying to find a cure to save humanity from the red flu. Granderson, O'Connor, Rios and Tex, who died to save his life. And all this to save humanity from the brink of extinction. First the red flu, then the red rust and then a cyber attack on the United States that finally seemed to have had it together. He had a lot on his mind. A million thoughts and questions that still were unanswered were running through his mind. Why did it all happen? Why were so many lives lost? What was the purpose or the bigger plan of it all? There had to be a bigger meaning for it all. It was like trying to build a puzzle, yet somehow the pieces didn't exactly seem to fit in.

The world was not the same. Things have changed. And it was still unsure if it was for better or for worse. Only time could tell. But one thing was sure. It was time to rebuild a society that collapsed and start anew. To learn from the mistakes of past leaders and hope for a better future for the young survivors and future leaders. Tom paid no attention to Sasha as she went to stand in the doorway of his office. "Tom..."

He didn't even look up at her. He stopped tapping with the pen on his desk but still gazed out in front of him brooding. "What has this world come to?" He paused.

"I don't know. Have you thought about what you're going to do?"

"There's nothing to think about."

"Tom?"

"I've lost everything. I've lost my wife. I've lost so many of my crew. I've lost my ship..."

"You still have me Tom. And you have Ashley and Sam. And Mike. We're your friends and your family."

"Yeah..."

Sasha pondered wondering if she still had to stick around or leave. He had been sulking for weeks and he started working on her nerves. "So what are you going to do now?"

"I've decided it's time to resign from the navy. To be there for Ashley and Sam. They need me more now than anything."

"The world still needs you Tom."

He turned around, still seated in his chair to look at her. "And what about the others?"

"Do you really want to leave them in this mess and walk out leaving them abandoned?"

"They have proven to be more than capable Sasha. What else do you want me to do?"

"To stop beating yourself up over something you couldn't control. It's not your fault the world is in chaos Tom."

"I'm done fighting Sasha."
