It was Raining. A lot. Still, due to the lack of food in his fridge, he had to rush out of the apartment complex with nothing but a coat to cover his head and slippers on his feet. He was clumsy for a landlord, but never when it came to work. That was the beauty of Jake. It was only on his way back did he hear the mewl of a kitten in a box on the side of the street. The writing on the cardboard was cursive and smudged, not to mention hard to read. He picked up the small kitten anyways, stroking its slick black fur with his hand. He noticed its piercing green eye, and the scar covering the other. Bringing it inside, he wrapped it in his coat and cradled it in his arms, keeping it safe and warm against his soaked body.
Once he made it to his own apartment, dodging the angry tenants and their all too aggressive pets, he placed the small kitten in his bathtub, filling it up to the creature's stomach with warm water before turning the tap off. He cleaned it, making sure to steer clear of its face, which it seemed all too protective over. He didn't mind though. Regret only started to hit when he realised he would be busy all week- and that he left his groceries out in the rain once he had found the cat outside. He let out a groan and flicked the water off of his hands, leaving the room to make a phone call to Ava for help, not only with the cat, but with food too. Ava was his girlfriend, and their relationship was fairly new, but he had liked her forever, so he already felt comfortable trusting her with this stuff. "Hey, Ava, I'm busy at work for a few days, and I found this kitten on the street. I've washed it up and made sure it was warm, but I was wondering whether you could look after it or not. You can? Great! I also need food... For me, you numpty, though I guess the cat needs some too... Really? You will? Great! Thanks, I owe you too many!" He hung up the phone, how happy expression fading. He thought he loved her, he really did, but... the relationship he had been chasing for so long, whilst he had it, it's not what he wanted. He thought he cared about her, but he had purposefully gotten another job just to get away from her. He was in a tough space, and as much as he wanted to end things, he just couldn't.
God, did he feel pathetic doing this... He slumped down by the side of the bath, interrupting the kitten from its activity of pouncing on bubbles. "Hey, I'm going to tell you something you literally can't repeat." He sighed. "I don't like Ava. I don't think I like her, anyways. Is this was love is like? Just continually running away from every chance we have? I know you're just a cat, but it feels good to say it without feeling like a loser, which I still do, but less of a loser than when I'm talking to myself about this..." he just stared at the small black thing in his bath, as it's green eye scanned him curiously. Jake couldn't do this... he couldn't be with Ava. He decided to sleep on it, hoping that he would've changed his mind by morning.
Hands were clasped around his throat, in a soft and somewhat pleasing manner. He couldn't see his face, just the smirk plastered onto it as he slammed into him, roughly, with enough force to break his spine. He hated it. He hated how he loved it. He shouldn't want this, so why did he?
He splashed his face with cold water. What the hell was that dream? Who the hell was that in his dream? Was it even a dream? It didn't feel like a dream. Jake had been lucid dreaming a lot recently, probably from the guilt stacking up, but this one... was concerning. Unlike the other dreams, this one had no tell of it being a, well, dream. It was realistic, each inch of fabric, each slight beam of light from his lamp, all accurate to the real world. But, the one thing he hated most, was how real he felt, being pinned down, feeling like he was trapped. He liked it. He splashed his face once more, and cringed as the cold hit his skin. Drying his face with a towel, he walked back into his room, only to hear his phone ring. That must've been Ava.
