they were in the school hallway.
they, being mike, el, a girl named stacy, and a crowd of other students.

"fight, fight, fight!" the students chanted, talking about mike and stacy.

and el?

she stood quiet in the crowd, fire in her large hazel eyes. she was pissed.

"y'know, wheeler, everyone would be better off if you just fucking killed yourself." stacy had said, laughing and flipping her hair.

mike stood there, taking it.

"your little girlfriend too. i bet she's just using you." she rolls her eyes, and that's when a crowd started to form. mike looked like he was near tears.

she kept throwing insult after insult, and that's when mike's small girlfriend walks out of the bathroom to see what's going on.

and that brings us to here.

mike sniffles and looks around before stacy grabs him by his collar and slams him into a locker, which was enough for el.

el, not knowing what to do, flings stacy into the air and into the ceiling before dropping her.

and instantly, by the look she was getting from mike, she knew that wasn't the right decision.

he looked through her as if to say, "you're dead when we get home."

el, terrified, wipes her nose with her sleeve and begins to run out of the school. she's caught by mike.

he grabs her wrist and shakes his head dismissively before pulling her outside to his bike.

they ride home in complete silence. el knew mike was mad. every day, he kissed her before they left school and talked about how much he loved her, and it didn't happen today. the silence was causing tears to form in the poor girl's eyes.

she loved mike so much, and cared more about him than anyone, and she disappointed him because she didn't want him hurt.

they arrive at home and crawl off of the bike. they both walk inside, and the second they close the door, mike speaks up.

"what the hell is wrong with you, el? you could've killed her! are you heartless?" he yells. "i can't believe you!"

she was the opposite of that. heartless, i mean.

"mike, i'm.. so sorry.." she sniffles, leaning in to hug mike..

but he pushes her away.

a little too hard, at that.

she falls to the ground and hits her head pretty hard. at that, she stands up and runs to his room as fast as possible.

mike broke a promise. he said he'd never hurt her, and he just hurt her.

she runs to the window and hops out. she didn't want to be there with someone who wanted to hurt her.

sobbing, she runs into the woods.

and mike? he felt like total shit. he realized that the reason she did what she did is because she actually because she loved him and didn't want him hurt.

but when he went to his bedroom, it was too late.

el was gone.

~

a week later, mike was still incredibly upset with himself. he had cried, called her, looked for her, and missed school. he was really mad and upset with himself.

"michael, dinner!" karen calls from the kitchen. he doesn't get up. he wasn't hungry.

after laying there for a while, mike hears his mom call for him again, but he ignores it.

and that's when he hears a faint knock on his door.

"go away, mom. i'm not very hungry." he sniffles.

his door opens, and a small girl with a frail figure and dirtied clothing comes through the door. "mike?"

he sits up quickly and gets out of bed. "el? oh my god, el.." he sniffles, rushing to her to hug her. he's stopped midway by el's powers. "no, mike."

he frowns and wipes his teary eyes. "el, you have to lis-"

"mike, you hurt me." el interrupts. "you broke a promise." she sniffles.

"i know, el, and i'm so sorry. i never meant to, and el, i love you more than anything. all you wanted to do was help me, and i overreacted." he sniffles. mike had always been an emotional kid. he wasn't afraid to cry unlike most boys.

el lets go of mike and wipes her nose. the sight of mike being upset hurt more than really.. anything.

she opens her arms and sniffles. "mike, come here."

mike reluctantly rushes to her and hugs her tightly. "i love you, okay? that won't happen again."

"i know, mikey. i know." she kisses his cheek and smiles.

"now, let's go watch a movie and cuddle on the couch. i need that, and i'm sure you do too." mike offers a small smile.

mike knew her so well, because that's exactly what she needed at that moment.

so there they were, sitting on the couch, cuddling close.
