it was a pleasant evening that day, with the clouds creating shapes in the sky, and the sunset, showing those who were paying attention to it, a beautiful portrait of soft colors. a young woman with locks of dark brown hair sat on a bench across from the sunset, a content smile painted onto her face. her hair fell into soft curls over her shoulders, and her chocolate colored eyes shone with obvious happiness.
her life seemed to be perfect. she had her own little apartment and her part-time job was going well since she wasn't broke yet. she and her best friend from middle school had reconnected awhile ago, and she was glad to know that her friend missed her too. oh yeah, and she had some good food today as well. and her day was going to get even better, since she was finally seeing her boyfriend again.
he had been busy with work she didn't know about, but she didn't want to invade his privacy and seem clingy. it had gotten much darker now and the people that had been walking down the streets had long gone, and she was alone with the crickets that echoed her loneliness with their constant chirps.
she looked up when she heard footsteps coming in her direction, her hands subconsciously curling into fists as she did so. she wasn't very experienced when it came to fights or anything, so they best she could do was toss a quick punch and run off if the person coming over was a possible kidnapper.
"sweetheart?" the person asked with obvious concern once they had gotten closer, though amusement was laced into their voice at the sight of her curled fists. he was not afraid, and never would be. he knew about her in capability to fight after all.
"dominic!" she exclaimed with relief, immediately relaxing at the sight of her boyfriend. he always snuck up in her like this. it was a wonder she didn't have a heart attack by now because of his stealth. "you scared me for a moment there."
"you already know that i'd never let anyone hurt you," dominic grinned, taking a seat next to the girl besides him. he placed his arm around her shoulders, tilting his head so that it touched hers. he focused on the sunset that was slowly starting to disappear.
"yes, but i'm still going to be alert. you never know what could happen." she responded playfully, leaning into his side. she loved him so much, and she hoped he loved her back. they had been together for awhile now, and they had so many wonderful memories that it felt like he was her soulmate.
"you're right," dominic responded simply, turning so that he could gaze into her dark brown colored eyes. she turned to do the same, and found herself lost in his dark, toxic green colored eyes. to others they looked cold and intimidating. to her, they looked warm and welcoming.
"i love you." she whispered, her hands finding his. dominic only smiled, but he didn't say it back. he never did, and she didn't understand why. he loved her, right? she always found reassurance in clutching his hand whenever she said so, sighing in relief when he didn't pull away. she'd wait until he was ready to say it himself.
she didn't noticed herself moving closer to him with every passing second until she was an inch away from his face. she parted her lips in surprise at her bashful actions, though she took advantage of the situation anyway. she didn't notice the small movement dominic made when she got close, since she was entranced by their closeness. she squeezed her eyes shut in anticipating, feeling his lips brush against hers. it was one soft, delicate movement. their first kiss. it was exciting, they were finally taking another step into their relationship.
her happiness disappeared when she felt a sharp sting of a blade cutting through her stomach.
this reminded her that her life wasn't perfect. memories from when she was a child came rushing back. she killed someone. she pushed another young girl like herself into a lake, even though she knew that the other girl couldn't swim. she watched the girl drown, too cowardly to go save her and bear with the hate that would be sent to her afterwards. it was too late, but she finally realized that the guilt of killing an innocent girl would be much worse than hate.
she slumped against dominic's side as red, sticky liquid poured from an open wound in her stomach. her vision started to blur as she looked up at dominic, a look of hurt and betrayal in her eyes. something inside her told her to not be surprised to see hatred and sick pleasure in his eyes. but she didn't want to die. she couldn't die, not yet. "why?" she managed to whisper hoarsely, shakily bringing her blood-covered hand to her face.
dominic's response was carefully picking her up, leading her to the edge of the park where a beautiful lake resided. the moonlight cast a glow over the rippling water, portraying perfection itself. "you killed her." he whispered, his hands starting to shake from underneath her. "it's your fault." his hands stopped shaking, and he was deadly calm. that was when she knew that her life had come to an end. the blinding pain she felt had started to numb, and she didn't notice the way she started to choke when she was tossed into the water.
she was drowning. she was drowning in pain, sorrow, guilt, betrayal. she truly did love him, but he didn't. it was all because of that girl from the past. her vision was barely anything but a blend of scattered dots, and the last thing she saw before she fell into a painful slumber, was a dark grin and a knife stained with her blood.
