The circle is important in both language and culture and has several different purposes. In language, the circle is important in geometry. This is because it is the locus of all points equidistant from a central point. On a graph it is formed when an arc is drawn from a fixed point in such a way that any point on the curves is the same distance from the centre. One special type of circle is x2 + y2 =r2 where (0,0) is the origin, or centre, and r is the radius of the circle (math.com and sunshinemaths.com). The amount of sides a circle has, has been debated for centuries and will continue to be debated for centuries to come, though there are several different theories as to how many sides a circle has. One theory is that if you think of a circle as a disk, then it has an upside and a downside. Another is that if you think of it as a curve it has an inside and outside. Both these support that a circle has a no sides. But, one theory says if you think of a circle as an n-sided regular polygon, one can justify that a circle has infinitely many infinitesimal sides (mathcentral.uregina.ca). Something you should know is that the radius of a circle is a line from the centre of the circle to a point on the edge of the circle and any point from the centre to the edge are the same (wiki.kidzsearch.com). To the ancient Greeks the circle was a symbol of divine symmetry and balance in nature. Greek mathematicians were fascinated by the circle and explored their geometry and properties for centuries (nrich.maths.org).

Though surprisingly, a circle has many different spiritual meanings including; notions of totality, wholeness, original perfection, the Self, the infinite, eternity, timelessness, all cyclic movement, and God, ''God is a circle whose centre is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere,'' Hermes Trismegistus (Umich.edu). They are also symbolically important today and represent harmony and unity (nrich.mths.org). The circle also symbolizes Mother earth, as it represents the spirit of feminine energy and a space that is sacred. The circle also symbolizes being closed in and boundaries (sunsigns.org)

Different circles can have different meanings, a like red or yellow circle, or an open circle. A red circle symbolizes guilt, sin, and anger, and is often connected to blood and sex. A yellow circle is a minimalistic reference to a gold medal or yellow traffic light. This embodies the crucial message of, 1) do the best you can with your reproduction, and 2) slow down and be cautious with reproductive health. An open circle represents "gather in our sacred circle, as we open our hearts to become aware of the symbolic CIRCLE POWER: ~ Know that it represents a universal, divine, mystical journey with no ending. ~ We get a strong sense of unity, inclusivity, wholeness, strength, "just us". US = United Souls" (wayofchampians.com, ucl.ac.uk, and yellowcircles.org).

As you can see, circles have many different meanings and purposes. To some, they may be extremely important, and to others, they could be nothing more than a simple shape.
