The school fell into a hushed silence as the news spread about both Cassidy Crane and Warren Peace. Cassidy was impacted by the shift, feeling an immense weight on her shoulders, while Warren remained nonchalant, unaffected by the new dynamic. Their presence instilled fear and set them apart from the rest of the student body, casting them into the role of outcasts.

Deep down, Cassidy had known this was how things would unfold, but some small part of her had held onto hope. The reality was anything but pleasant, and she struggled to maintain a positive outlook as harsh words and hushed whispers reached her ears, leading to moments where she would glare at the perpetrators.

"Just ignore them," Warren's voice chimed in unexpectedly, causing Cassidy to jump in surprise. She whirled around to face him, her breath quickening in response before she pouted and lightly slapped his arm in protest.

"You nearly gave me a heart attack!" Cassidy exclaimed, placing a hand on her chest to emphasize her point. Warren chuckled in response, leaning against the lockers and looking rather amused with himself.

"You'll live," came his nonchalant response. He kept a neutral expression on his face, but there was a hint of concern in his tone. "I thought something was keeping you," he added quietly, the words hanging in the air between them.

"Well, I was on my way to the cafeteria, but our lovely 'fans' had other ideas," Cassidy explained with a resigned sigh, lifting her damaged bag to illustrate the point. "Honestly, it's getting harder and harder to keep this from my Nana," she added, frustration clear in her voice.

As Warren inspected the damaged bag, his expression darkened. His jaw tensed and he looked up at Cassidy, his voice low and edged with anger. "Who did this? Give me a name, and I'll take care of it."

Cassidy took the damaged bag from him and placed it in her locker, pulling out a replacement in its place. She waved the new one at him with a defiant huff, her eyes meeting his fiercely.

"I've already learned the hard way," Cassidy replied, her eyes still locking with his. She knew that confrontation wasn't the best choice, but she couldn't let herself be constantly bullied either.

Warren regarded her with a smirk before challenging her, "What if you run out of bags, then what?" He knew he had her beat with logic, and he watched as her shoulders sagged in defeat. But then, he surprised her, gently patting her shoulder and offering a softer, sincere smile - one that deviated from his usual cocky demeanor.

Warren sighed and leaned his head back against the lockers.

"As I said, tell me the name," he repeated, a familiar hint of annoyance in his tone.

Cassidy shut her locker and moved past him with purpose, determined to ignore his words. As she walked down the hallway, she sensed Warren fall into step beside her. Together, they walked through the sea of students who parted before them, their heads held high as they focused on their destination and ignored the reactions and stares.

As the days passed and the first few months of school came and went, Cassidy tried to convince herself that the fear surrounding them would gradually diminish. But deep down, she couldn't help but wonder if it would ever truly go away. She knew that someday they might have the opportunity to prove themselves, and the fear in the eyes of their peers would transform into guilt. But for now, she kept that hope buried, focusing on getting through each day with her head held high.

As they settled at their usual table, Cassidy found solace in the familiar routine. They quietly read their books and exchanged in hushed conversation, and she couldn't help but remember the first time Warren had come over to sit with her. There was a nostalgic comfort in these moments.

Despite his casual claim about not having a place to sit, Cassidy noticed a few empty tables nearby, clearly available. She silently noted the truth behind his statement but didn't dare call him out on it. Warren was a character, and she knew better than to challenge his pride.

Over time, their friendship began to blossom. The first weeks had been nothing more than casual seating companions, but soon enough they were officially friends who spent their lunch hours together. Surprisingly, their connection extended further, and they started riding the bus together and walking to classes in tandem.
