Standing next to her though was a girl I have never met before. She smiled shyly and waved.
She had dark-brown hair that went just past her shoulders, with neatly cut bangs. Her cheeks looked so pinchable .. She had hazel brown eyes and was wearing an overall with a white polo shirt underneath.
“Aye Luke, who’s that?” I muttered.---------
"Oh yeah, Ash. You haven't met my girlfriend, that's right"
He glared at me, telling me to stop looking at her like that.
I grinned a huge grin and introduced myself.
"Hey, I'm Ashton Irwin... Lucky girl man. What have I missed in 5 years. Your name?"
She giggled and looped arms with Luke.
"Hey ash, I've heard all about you. I'm Nita Kong. Nice to meet you"
After talking a bit more, mum cleared her throat and broke the reunion.
Disappointing, really.
We all jumped in the minivan my mum is so so so proud of. She's had this for forever.
Pretty sure I was taken back home from the hospital when I was born, by this minivan.
I rode back seats with Kat and let Nita and Luke take middle row. No one rode shotgun, surprisingly.
I missed the hot Australian air. There was just something about it that you can't replicate anywhere.
I managed to not fall asleep again on the drive home, but talked to Kat instead.
At some point, all of us joined in on a "Character" game where you had to name characters of a particular topic.
I figured I'd be pretty good at it but somehow Kat took the win as she named a character and no one could continue on.
Luke had a mini party planned, for my homecoming tonight. And obviously I would hardly know many people because I'm aware that people's friendship circles change over time - let alone 5 years.
But thats the thing I love about Luke and I's friendship: I don't think it'll ever fall apart. It just can't.
We pulled up to a completely different house and my mum couldn't stop laughing at my reaction. This was a well kept secret from me, the fact that they moved houses , but still in the same neighbourhood...
How cruel.
"But mum? The amount of letters and parcels I sent to our old adress??" I complained.
She only grinned and said "I got the man who lives there now to bring it over when he's on his daily walks... He's completely fine with it. HAHA your face was totally priceless..."
I guess Kat knew too because she couldn't stop laughing. Even she was in on this?!
"Wait so Kat, you're not our neighbour?" I pulled an exasperated face and pouted at her.
"Nahh, but I just literally live 5 houses away"
Nita and Luke stood hand in hand next to the door and he waved for me to come in.
Mockingly, obviously over-dramitically, at the fromt of the paved sidewalk, I did a bow and offered my hand to Kat.
She couldnt stop laughing as she looped her arm around mine and we comically marched into the new house.
Outside, you could say it was a pretty modern design, having a rectangular look and the wooden oak door hints that it was going to be a fusion of antique and modern furnitures.
Guess whaaaaaat? I was right.
The walls were painted a slight creamy colour with gold as the feature wall opposite the door.
The place was so clean thay I found it so unnatural.
There was even an "upstairs".
Harry and Laura, my adorable little siblings, hesitantly stepped down the stairs and looked at me curiously.
Laura, being the older one recognised me immediately and ran in for a hug.
I swear she could've knocked me over.
I looked up at Harry and saw a spark of recognition.
Finally... I thought for a second he seriously forgot me.
As they both embraced me, I whispered in their ears
"I have something for you both. I'm sorry for being such a bad brother"
I let them go and reached for my backpack.
Unzipping it, I pulled out the two iPods I bought in customs and handed one to each of them.
Since I knew their favorite colpurs would change, I just got one black and silver. Luckily, they were happy with the choices, Harry with black and Laura with the silver one.
My mum eyed me suspiciously.
"Ashton, really? You didn't have to"
Harry interrupted my mum and said "ASH oh my god thankyou! I've always wanted one. Don't worry, we forgive you for leaving us for 5 years."
Laura nodded and grinned. They both got to inspecting their presents whilst I went back to Luke, Nita and Kat.
Remembering the other present in my bag, I took out two black singlets, initially for luke. I gave one to him and the other to Nita knowing perfectly well it was way too large.
HOWEVER, people can rock overlarge singlets, ya know?
I explained this to Nita, and how to wear it, and she took it gratefully.
"Shall we have lunch?" Nita asked.
"Sure thing, pizza?" Kat suggested.
"THAT sounds perfect, LETS GO!"
I dropped off all my bags in a non-hazardous zone, told mum I was leaving and headed off. We took to walking and enjoying the heat. Because it wasn't that far off anyway.
Luke turned around at some point and gestured towards the red bandanna still on my head.
"By the way, ash, this punk rock looks really suits you. To be honest polo shirts weren't really your thing"
"HAHA thanks mate. I feel stoked with this look."
We sat ourselves down in a rustic looking pizza parlour and placed our orders. Altogether we thought 3 pizzas should be more than enough, due to our appetite and hate for airplane food.
We talked and talked, and basically caught up with each other.
It turns out Kat and Nita are actually best friends, and are planning to move out overseas.
This was rather fitting, two pairs of best friends, eating pizza on a nice australian day.
We had so many stories to tell, and I laughed three quarters of the way. The other quarter was spent eating and trying not to choke on food.
I wouldn't mind staying here permanently. Things were like they used to be.
I could've sworn I thought something I didn't think I would think for a very long time.
I felt happy.
