Jump.

Heart pounding, I look over the edge. An eternity spans me and the bottom.

Jump.

I can hear them getting louder. Closer. Heartbeat quickens.

Jump. Jump. Jump.

There is only one way out. Only one option of escape. Down.

Jump.

This time I obey. I jump, spiraling through the air, and wait for the bottom.

Gods, freedom is sweet.

That's all I felt as I plummeted, plummeted, plummeted towards the bottom of the void. Freedom is so beautiful.

It took an eternity of bribery and a surprising amount of duct tape to finally be able to escape that stupid pit. Freedom is so incredible.

I could hear them fading into the distance. In a couple months, weeks, days, hours (who knows?), they'll be back to get me and repair the damage. But I don't care. Freedom is so amazing.

And so I plummet. Escaping again will definitely put another burn in my permanent reputation, but it doesn't matter. Freedom is so wonderful.

Gods, freedom is sweet.

Ah, here's my destination.

***

It's illegal to cross the border between realms without a pass from the godly council, but that's just BS.

Remember kids, don't try this at home. I'm a trained professional in illegally traveling between worlds.

And so I fell. I dropped through the realm barrier, slicing through the border like falling through liquid.

Bang. Just like that, I was in the mortal world.

My landing wasn't exactly graceful, and it definitely took a toll on my rear, but that's not important. Injuring my bum was worth leaving that hole. Freedom is so sweet.

Savor it, I thought bitterly, It's not going to last long. I sucked in a deep lungful of air, closed my eyes, and forgot my problems. Just for a moment.

Something bothered me, though; something that tugged and pulled at my attention. Something that shouldn't have been there.

Devastation.

I opened my eyes and that was all I saw. Devastation.

Something else was there. I could feel it.

Hate. Greed. Struggle. Pain.

And something else. A sharp tang that rolled off the breeze, rolled off the rubble, rolled off the earth. It was suffocating; I choked.

Death.
