The morning sun came streaming through the window of my bedroom the next day when I woke up. My room was lit up and when I sat up in my new bed, with the blankets pooling into my lap. I turned my head out the window that was next to me.
I didn't notice this before, but I could see the neighbors next door window across from me, not too far away.
The curtains were closed, a dark scarlet red. I wonder who would look through if someone was on the other side.
My head turns away from the window to catch sight of the skateboard laying across my floor, with the red ribbon torn in two, laying on the floor.
A knock sounded on my door and shook me from my thoughts. I tossed the blue blankets off of my legs to let them down on the floor as the door slowly slipped open and my uncle poked his head through the door.
"Morning, sleepy head," he says, smiling softly. He looked like he just woke up himself. His hair was stuck up in every direction and his eyes looked tired. "Get ready, kiddo. Headmaster Varyn wants to speak with you today."
"Headmaster?" I asked, wiping away the drool from my cheek. "Bit fancy for a small town school, isn't it?"
He chuckles, hands going into the front pockets of his grey zip up hoodie. "Well, this whole community is pretty exclusive. Our schools are the same."
I stand up from the bed, and walk over to my bags laying in the corner. "All right, let me just get in the shower."
"Sounds good," he closes the door with a soft click and I return to my bags.

The drive up to the school was quiet, but comfortable. Dex kept his eyes on the road, but allowed the sound of soft music to come through the radio.
The town seemed to always be abuzz with people. During the day, nighttime. Was there a time when people weren't moving about the small town of Arcane Hills?
"So are you excited to be attending Arcane Hills high school?" Dex asks me.
I shrugged my shoulders, as I look down into my lap at my phone that's resting in between my hands. "I suppose. I'm just confused on how that's gonna work. I mean, isn't the place revolving around magic and stuff? How am I gonna fit in there?"
"It's not all about magic, Max. The school teaches about normal things, too. It's not so different from Dagfinn High. The only place where magic is needed is in Mr. Zander's class. But you won't need to worry about that class."
"Is it a magic class?" I ask.
He looks over at me and chuckles. "Something like that. I can't really tell you, it's kind of a thing around here."
"What is?" I stop scrolling through my social media, and watching skating vids on my phone for a second to look up at my uncle curiously.
"The magic class. It's more exclusive than this whole town. Only a few kids get selected every year to take the class. Only those who have a true potential with magic."
"And you took it?"
He nods his head.
"And my Mom?"
"She was always asked every year to take it, but your mother had no desires to work with her magic on a professional level like most other kids did."
"Why?"
He shrugged his shoulder back at me, the question was up in the air for both of us it seemed. "Your mom kind of… hated her magic. She was a powerful witch, one of the most powerful I've ever seen. But she believed magic made us weak in a way, she thought we relied too much on it. Which is why I think she respected Thomas so much. Your dad was one hell of a warrior, even without magic."
