"Psst...psst"
Biba was halfway upstairs when she heard the sound. To her surprise, she caught sight of Uwani hunched behind the couch trying to get her attention.
The size of her eyes told Biba something was definitely up. She followed her as she hurried back to the kitchen to join Atika.
"Will you tell her or should I?" Uwani nudged Atika who seemed to be a bit shaken.
On seeing the look on Atika's face, Biba forgot her own woes for a minute and her face became awash with concern.
"What is happening?" She asked.
"It looks like I will have to be the one to tell you then, even though I wish I wasn't...its not like I enjoy spreading news you see, but since..."
"Your rants are making my head spin, just get on with it already." Said an impatient Biba.
"Why will your head spin, oh my God! Don't tell me you knew what has happened already?" Uwani asked while putting a hand to cover her gaping mouth.
"How will I know, when you are supposed to be the one to tell me and all you have been doing is going back and forth like a yoyo."
"Oh yes, that...you see," she moved closer and lowered her voice. "I went to get the flask from Mani to wash, and there I saw Idi...and I swear I am not lying, blood was coming out of his nose and mouth, and I think your husband,...I mean Anwar ran him over with his car." She stopped when she felt she was running out of breathe.
"Why will he do that?" Asked Biba.
"I am coming to that...ehen, you see ba, as I was running back to tell Atika because you know he and she are...oh, forget that. Well, I heard heated argument coming from the garden and Anwar and Jabir were there." She stopped again and look at both girls to weight in the impact of her news.
"And that is not just it, Kamal is back from school...all of this look suspicious, I tell you." Atika added.
"We think something is about to happen, we advice you don't go to your room, else you will miss it all." Uwani concluded with a nod.

Idi had no idea how bad of a day he was having until late at night when the call came.
"I heard what transpired at your employers house. What do you have to say about it?"
It has been over a year now since he first heard the voice. But, like the first time he heard it, though cool and levelled, it didn't fail to send the same chill down his spine.
"Eh yallabai, it is nothing serious, just a small misunderstanding. It is nothing you should be worried about." Idi answered a little too fast for his comfort.
"I do not desire informations concerning the gravity of your misdeeds, rather..."
And as usual there was a break, Idi had no idea if it was deliberate on the callers part to stop mid sentence in other to keep up with the disguise, or if it was the actual way he spoke. That would have been a bummer.
"I advice it never happens. I will hate if you turned out to be a bad investment."
Idi's throat felt dry but he dare not move a muscle for he was afraid it will reverberate to yallabai's (as he calls him) ears.
"I presume we have an understanding now, don't we?"
"Yes, yes Yallabai, I give you my word."
The call was cut without acknowledging the last comment. That was the his style.
As soon as it ended, he turned on the switch only to realise Nepa had taken the lights. He sat upright on the rundown mattress and became even more aware of the sourness of his face as he gingerly touched his swollen lips.
He went to the wall where his clothes were hanged on a make shift hanger. which was basically plain wood nailed on the wall with six inches nails serving as hangers. He searched through various pockets and came up empty handed.
He then proceeded to go through the dirty ones strewn all over the room and also came up empty handed. He became frantic as he began emptying a dirty pillow case which sat in the corner and was filled with various item ranging from broken chargers, a 25mm air filter, a broken earpiece, a pairless booth, among other things.
In the end, when he was sure he had truly ran out of joints, he checked the time on his phone and realised it was not too late to go out and get fixed.
Later, halfway through his second joint, his nerves have calmed down and his thoughts even clearer. As he watched a wisp of grey smoke, his mind went back to the first time when Yallabai had contacted him.
It was like he had stuck gold. The deal was a life changer and too easy if you asked him. All that was needed of him was to keep his job, give updates on his employer and nothing more.
The best part was the money. At first, it sounded too good to be true, had it not been the sound of the deadpan polished voice, he would have dismissed it as a prank call. He received instructions via his phone and gives informations as well. There had been no physical contact nor is there any plans of it in the foreseeable future.
He had no idea what the grand master plan was, but for all he knew, no matter how it turns out, he was the one who will end up making the most out of it. He watched his account grow with every passing month. It was just what he needed to get him out of the miserable life he had been living.
He knows it is just a matter of time before he says goodbye his current squalid living condition and says hello to life of affluence.
He stared long at the figures in his bank account and like wisp of the smoke he blew, all his worries seem to dissipate into oblivion.
