Chapter 3

Shaking off the bugs of fear, I raised my hand for a three
part knock and waited until I heard a response. Carefully opening the door and stepping in, my heart tapped harder against my chest as I walked a respectful distance to the main desk.

"Good morning, sir. Charlene told me you wanted to see me..?" I waited for his response while my heart punched my chest.

"You do not speak until I have spoken to you." He replied as his eyes roamed my appearance. "Understood?"

I did not know what to say or how to react because I was unsure if I was being insulted or assisted. This man seemed so uptight and tricky that if I said something that didn't please him, I could be fired by the blink of an eye. So I simply cleared my throat and gave a small nod, waiting for his next statement.

Tension, for me that is, surrounded me, taking my confidence in large gulps as I waited. I took countless breaths as anxiety drank me in.

What was going on?
Now that question caused panic to eat at my pride. Seriously, what was going on?

"Stop clicking your tongue." My eyes went wide as I froze in my action.

Did I really just do that?

Kayla, hold yourself, come on!

As I stood in caution and roaming my eyes around the wall in front of me (the one behind the boss' desk), I heard a shuffle of papers in front of me and the boss cleared his throat with his visibly audible husky voice. That caused me to look at him, still slowly melting in suspense, as to what he had to say.

"I hear you're good at socializing," he started his 'speech' and went on," so there's an event that we are in charge to take care of, since it's at Partson Hotel. I'm sure you know that is one of ours and, as I said, I heard you're good at socializing. So I was going to give that task to you as a task to coordinate that event. It's a dinner event so it must be presentable and formal. I expect standard level preparation. The event will be this Friday night, so you have 3 days to sort this out. Charlene will give the information that is of your level and I expect no complaints or troubles." He looked at me with his stern fierce sea-blue eyes waiting for my response.

I blink rapidly as I took in the book-sized spoken information.
Wow. This is a load. I mean, it's like a promotion or just a random pick.

That's when I realized that I had not responded to his order. What do I say? Thank you? Why me? I don't know. So I said the first think a minor would say to the authority.
"Um, yes sir..." I replied with a shaking voice. I probably sounded like someone who was falling unconscious while speaking.

After that he ordered me to leave with not even one glimpse and I walked out of his office, closing the door as carefully as I thought I could.

As I stood by the door, I noticed Charlene was looking at me. She was probably waiting for my exit with the information the boss said she would guide me with.

"You're back, safe and sound. Are you okay, though? You look a little pale." I guess Charlene has seen this many times- the facial expressions, the breathing, the shivering... Everything.

I gulped with force and walked towards her desk.
"Yeah, um, I'm okay....I guess." I didn't really know what I was feeling. I totally felt confused, though. Yes confused.

Yep. Totally confused.

I took another deep breath to soften my throat with my eyes closed before I spoke again.
"Um, Mr Partson said you had something to give me or share with me." I looked around with an uneasy feeling of self esteem.

"Hey," She tapped my hand softly as she looked at me with calm expression. "Don't panic or freak out. Take it as a huge opportunity for, I don't know, meeting a bunch of rich people? Whatever you're hoping for. Just do your best."

I took in the words she said and gave her a small smile,"Thank you."

I waited as she combined the few documents I needed, giving me a mini summary of what needs to be done and the guest list. She gave me a bunch of phone numbers of who to contact about what. The good thing was that the invites had already gone out. It was clear that the guest list was over fifty people.

Rich People (eyeroll)

This meant that I would not be coming to PC for the next three days.
That's a good thing, I hope.

I waited a few longer for the rest of the information until I was carrying a five centimeter tray full of papers to my work floor.

When people say anything can happen? Don't take it as a joke because, LITERALLY, anything can happen. Take it from me, I just experienced it.

I drowned in thought as I stood in the elevator, thinking of the pros and cons and why I was chosen for this.

No, I'm not downgrading myself, no. I'm just surprised that they picked me- a girl who makes coffee for the staff and sorts papers and is barely noticed except by her desk neighbor and the grumpy eye-watch manager.
Why me?

So as I reached my work floor, I trotted to my booth and sunk into my chair, softly (if that's possible) slamming the tray of papers onto my desk with a heavy sigh and I closed my eyes.
I don't know how long I was like this until a shoulder poke startled me, causing me to jump in my seat.

I looked up and saw Maggie there with a confused expression.
"What happened to you?" She asked.

I looked at her and sighed as I sat up in my chair, taking the first batch of task information and I gave her the best reply I could.

"Life is such a shocker."
