The sound of my five forty-five alarm woke me up, making me feel annoyed just by its sound. I didn't want to get up, but I had to.I stretched my left arm for my phone on my nightstand and cut the alarm off.
The sun was starting to seep in through the curtains as I opened my eyelids slowly.Welcome to the next day, Kayla.
I lazily stumbled out of bed and I was immediately greeted by my reflection. Judging by the expression on my face, I did not look so good coming straight from the blankets. How did the people in the movies come out so flawless with no puffy eyes? Oh, that's right.... They aren't really doing it.
I rolled my eyes to my thoughts as I dragged myself to the bathroom. I took a really, REALLY, soothing hot shower and prepared for work. I applied a line of eyeliner under my eyes and a few dabs of eyeshadow to my eyelids, preferably purple, and I painted my lips a soft velvet lipstick. I wasn't much of a makeup fan, but it never hurt to try once in a while.
Now I was locking the door to my apartment. I scurried down the stairs and onto the walkway.
I drove to work, which was just a ten minute drive from where I lived. .
Work started at seven-thirty, but I usually enjoyed being there early. Good for me, I arrived and they were just unlocking the doors.
Nice. Seven o'clock.I greeted the guard and walked to my desk. The great thing was that my little office booth was at the very end. So I never had many bothering me. Besides, all I did was take coffee and organize files....
The good thing is, I still earned quite a classy salary. A hundred dollars a day was a good start."Hey, Kayla. Good morning." My office neighbor, Maggie Shayne, greeted me as she dropped her handbag to her chair.
"Hey Maggie. You look good. Going somewhere?" She really did look different.
"Yep!" She popped the 'P'. "Going on a date with my paperwork", she cringed to herself as she sarcastically replied.
"What? Well, make sure to get your first kiss of tiredness anytime so–."
"Johnson! Shayne! No time for man battle! Get to work!" Mr Connors yelled out with his usual stern face. I wondered if he ever smiled. It's not even time yet! I mean, I can sort of understand his grumpy state because his wife passed away five years ago. Jane Connors was a lovely woman.
Mr Connors passed by our section, yelling to whoever he was following. I released a sigh as I turned my chair to face my desk. Just as I turned around, Maggie nudged my elbow. That was a signal that he had arrived. .
Who? You might ask?
That's right. Adonai Partson.
I watched as he walked in with two bodyguards trailing behind him. Seriously? People greeted him but he just walked by like he was the only body on earth. I'm pretty sure he didn't realize he had bodyguards. If he did, then I don't know if it would be a good or bad thing. Under those shades they probably had sad and dark eyes, but they still managed to pull the spy kind of look.
I watched him as he walked into the elevator and the doors closed.
What a show.
I stood up from my chair and made my way to the coffee machines in the eating area.Another day.
Making coffee was easy. But making it for the boss himself always put you on the ledger line. The good thing was that I didn't have to take it to him.
He was not one to enjoy company. I was pretty sure he hated being head of Partson Corporate. After all, it was his family's business. His father and mother left him to lead when they decided they were tired and were going to "take on the world", they say.
Typical rich families (take note of the eye roll)As I started to walk to the elevators, my thoughts kept me wondering if Adonai had any friends.
But of course he had. How could he not? All guys had their 'pals' to hang out with. Right? The elevator door opened when it arrived to my destination.
I handed the coffee cups to the receptionist, Charlene, on that floor and turned to walk away, but she called my name, causing me to stop my tracks and turn back around."Mr Partson had asked to see you in his office at eight o'clock. Since it's already seven forty-five, you might as well wait here for the fifteen minutes seeing that going back to the first floor would take you five minutes and same as coming back." She signaled that I sit in the waiting area.
"Yes, ma'am." I responded as I sat down. I couldn't help but wonder why the boss would want to see me. Had I done something wrong? Did something happen to his coffee? No. It can't be about his coffee, I only brought it up a minute ago. I was more than surprised by the fact that he knew that I actually existed...
I hadn't realized that my thoughts had drowned me until I heard a small cough. Charlene was looking at me.
That was when I realized that it was time to go in. I said a silent prayer as I walked the hallway to the last doorGod be with me...
